Butt Spikes on Two-Handed swords

Post by Thomas MacFinn »

I'm not a fan of butt spikes, so I never thought of this question until somebody else asked me...

It is common for many people to shave down the grip of their swords to better fit in the hand. In those kingdoms that allow butt spikes on two-handed swords, is a thin grip allowed if the area under the spike remains over 1.25" ?

you can shave down as much as you want as long as the diameter of the butt spike is with in regulation you are fine

Half swording and butt spikes vary a little between kingdomes.
Also plan on variations at larger interkingdom events like pennsic.

interesting, it looks like east allows butt spikes.

Midrelm does also but has a ruling against weapons with a 360 degree striking surface.
To me that sounds a lot like the Kong/potato sorter maces.
Though the PDF maybe out of date.

The info is fairly easy to find under the earl marshals portion of the kingdom webpage.

Some events/tournaments use the rules of the hoast kingdom or have other restrictions.

At times the "rules" will have an appended/addendum that covers changes between updates.
When in doubt ask the MIC

this is not correct. no offensive part of a weapon may be less than 1.25", striking or thrusting.

ahh gotcha. i took "butt spike" to mean the padded striking surface, not the end of the rattan. the end of the rattan must be no less than 1.25" the "handle" can be as skinny as you wish.
