Need Early-Period Gauntlets

Post by Rhyance »

This is going to be one of those SCA kludges. My persona would never have worn gauntlets; neither would the Roman regulars that he was killing whenever the opportunity presented.

But the rules and the fact that I'm a commercial pilot and a musician in the real world mandate that I don't get my hands destroyed. So I'm looking for a pair of gauntlets that will be light, protective, and look as little wrong as possible.

Whose stuff should I be looking at?

Thanks,
~R.

Darkwood stealth finger gaunts would look the best but mittens would be more protective, IMHO. Torvaldr mitts would be protective, light and look the business.

You haven't told us what your persona is. There may be an alternative you have not envisioned.

I thought I had. He's a person who fights Roman regulars. To be more precise, late Iron Age (La Tene period) Celtic.

And Grettir's work is terrific, but his waiting list is forever.

Age of craft "wisby" gauntlets, the brown look a good bit like proper gloves and there was just a glowing review of them.

A vote for Draven. I wear her gauntlets and Tuesday I took a direct pole arm shaft hit across the back of my left hand, and I'm typing with it!

Draven gets the deal. I'll be sending in the form and paypalling the money forthwith.

Your options are less limited than you think. Look up 'crupellarii'. Very interesting. It's a pity we have so little data. Not buying the 'bucket' helm, though; if the sculpture is indeed showing one, the top is not flat, but rounded.

If the time period was the only limited factor you would be correct. However, I'm playing a La Tene period Celt - of the Ordovices specifically - so looking like a Roman is pretty much out of the question.
Nope, I'll put Draven's gauntlets south of Magus Ulfgarsson's leather arms and call it good. When I'm off the field they both come off so the woad-colored tattoos show up better.
