WTB kydex or steel splints

Post by Hrolfr »

For SCA armored combat.

Open to other (for example ABS) options.

Arm, thigh and shin.

Perhaps multiple sets of each to be purchased.

I don't 'do' Paypal, I pay by money order (and have a pretty good reputation, I believe).

I can trim so custom lengths are not vital, I can put holes in.

What sizes?
I have a shear and a sheet of 16 & 14 gauge steel.
If you just need strips cut most of us can do the work.

I can order ABS easily enough as well.
But you can likely cut them just as easily with any saw.
Jigsaw, or table saw should cut strips in just a few moments.

NoVa plastics in Va has decent prices if your buying by the sheet.

Big box home repair stores in the section selling deck hardware usually sell 16g plates in various lengths that are for attaching sections butted together. They're 1 1/2" wide if memory serves me correctly and you can buy anywhere from 4 to 12 inch lengths.

Hope that helps.

1 1/4" x 12" $0.98 each at Home Depot

Searched for Z Max and found them, let's see if this link works.

Sure thing, Andy! How many and how much?

I've got two kits (one for me, one for my son) to build this winter......

Thanks. The prices in McMaster-Carr are a bit high, but they are next day to me.

What is really funny is I work in a plastic extrusion shop. We don't do ABS, tho, otherwise it would be stupid cheap

Your local ace hardware may change a bit more but will have similar items.
If not instock than on special order.

Uhmw or HDPE can also work in thicker sections.
Kydex works well, a number of other plastics also work.
You may have an enginear or materials science person in house able to give you other options.

As long as its uv stable and tolerates temps your golden.

The UHMW and HDPE we do are usually thinner (.0050-.0075"). I'll check and see if we run heavier, it might be odd colors, but hidden, it will not matter.

We are a small extrusion house, mainly automotive, thin (.0030-.0055") Keldax (NOT Kydex, damn it! )

Hmmmmmm, got me thinking now, and boy, is that dangerous

After reading the data sheet is reads a little like fusible interfacing.
Thermal bonding foam and plastic laminates.

Not exactly what you want for splints,
though it may work to add a little structure to leather.
More masks and costume pieces.
Someone with more of a materials science /enginear background would know more of posible applications withing posible SCA projects.

If you are refering to Keldax, then yes.

We ran some UHMW a week or so ago, I'll have to check on the gauge.
We run HDPE a couple times a month, again, I'll have to check gauge.

Thanks everyone, I think I heading in a slightly different direction!

Just a mention for Norva plastics I ordered a full sheet of 1/8" abs from them years ago and they cut it in to like 2 pieces for cheaper shipping. They were really great to order from and I built several hidden splinted kits with the stuff, and still have a bit left over. Whenever someone wants to buy abs for armor I recommend them.
