The moving-in sale continues and I hope you guys don't mind my listing metalwork appropriate stuff here....
For sale is my "buzz-box" Lincoln AC-255 (KC1170) arc welder. It doesn't get any cheaper than this for welding big stuff. I used it lightly for many years to weld up tools, plate and bar-stock while I used my gas rig for the thin stuff. My new Pulse MIG welder can handle big stuff (and do it better and cleaner) so I have no need for this one anymore.
Looking to get $200 which will include cables in excellent condition, a basic welding helmet and my stockpile of electrodes.
The welder runs on 220 volt single-phase power and should have a 50 Amp circuit. (NEMA 6-50 plug/receptable)
Pickup is in Brattleboro, VT or I can bring it along with me to Birka over in Manchester, NH in January with up-front payment.

Re: FS Stick welder
I have a Lincoln 220 buzzbox, so I'm just here for the assist...
Some other info that might seal the deal for you:
-What is a "basic helmet"? Is it auto-darkening? What brand is it?
-How many electrodes and what size? Mostly 6013s, or do you have specialty (read: expensive) stuff in there too? Rods add up quick, and way quicker if they're not standard.
For those who don't know or are just getting into this, you will not be making armor with a welder like this (I did once..... once), but nevertheless I've found mine invaluable. I bought mine with my 1994 tax refund and I'm still sticking stuff together with it 20 years later. I used it to make a proper leg vise stand just two nights ago:
http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a55 ... 4au6hc.jpg
The welding on this whole stand took maybe a total of 10 minutes. And that's 1/2" plate on the bottom, 3/8" plate on the top, 3/16" wall tube upright, and 1/16" tube diagonals.
As long as you don't really care if it puts down perfect beads, stick welders are wonderful tools to have around. And this one looks like it's in good condition and going for a great price.

Stuff I will trade for: PWM controllers, steel sheet/rod/bar (4130/410/1050/toolsteel), ITC, casting supplies, wood tools, silver, oxpho blue, gun stuff (9luger/357mag/12g/7.62x54R/22LR), hammers, stakes, or pitch me!

I dunno man, I gotta stick up for stick welders. I work with pipe fitters who put down miles of perfect beads. I've seen armor made with mig welds that look like cold lumps of clay laid over the joint. The thing with this type of buzz box is that you don't have much room for adjustments on the low end so it's harder to weld 14 gauge and thinner.
Re: FS Stick welder
That's exactly why I said there isn't going to be much armor made with it - I think torches are the best option for actual armoring (since they heat, too), but for welding up big tools, you're not going to stay on a budget unless it's a stick.WendallVonDerEisenstein wrote:The thing with this type of buzz box is that you don't have much room for adjustments on the low end so it's harder to weld 14 gauge and thinner.

Re: FS Stick welder
Yeah, as I said in the OP I used my gas rig for the thin stuff (I.E. armour stuff) I regard this welder an an entry level tool-maker which in our profession is mostly welding solid stock together to make a stake or form. I tried it on thin sheet once and just blew holes in it instantly (I'm not the greatest welder to be fair).
The helmet is a passive (I.E not auto-darkening) shade #10. Its a lincoln helmet that came with the welder. My auto darkener is going in the garbage as I finally got shield gas for the new MIG up and running (Pulse MIG requires a weird mix that my local place didn't have on hand) and quickly discovered that my cheapo ($75) helmet is no longer functioning properly (Hadn't used it in probably 2 years since I started the house thing) and I flashed myself pretty good. I get to wait another week to play with the new MIG while a until superior helmet arrives.
Given that a decent auto helmet costs more than I'm selling this whole rig for, I hope it can be forgiven that the helmet I'm including is the most basic of the basic.
The electrodes I'll follow up with tomorrow.

Re: FS Stick welder
Price drop to $175.
Also, as far as electrodes it looks like I've got
-Most of a 5lb box of 7018
- about 1/3 a 5lb box of 80T AC+
- about a pound of MG500
