WTB Mid 14th century sword

I'm looking to buy a mid 14th century sword with a diamond cross-section like a Oakeshott type XV. I have at least $400.0 in the budget and would like to get as high as quality as I can. Even if that means just the blade, I can make the rest of the hardware. Any links would be most appreciated. Thanks,

Save-up a bit more money and keep an eye out on MyArmoury or swordbuyersguide and you might be able to pick-up a Poitiers by Albion or a Duke of Urbino from A&A at a second hand price. That's if you're married to the acute profiled XV.

XVI, XVII and XVIII are also swords that appear in the mid to late 14th century.

You didn't mention if you would be willing to consider a longsword. Hanwei Tinker sells a replacement blade that is a type XVIa which you could add your own hardware to.


XVI's
Museum Replicas has the "European Sword" on close-out; $215 for the sharpened version. For Albion, it is represented by their Prince and the Squire. The squire would be the cheaper of these last two, but even second hand, it would probably run $750 in good condition.

XVII's
Albion Sempach and Landgraf are the only XVII's that I'm aware of. But despite a sword type that has little reproduced representation, Oakeshott said of the XVII, "English monuments between circa 1355 and 1425 show them almost exclusively."

XVIII's
Museum replicas had a sword called the Arbedo that is no longer produced but is pretty nice if someone is willing to part with it. I think one appeared on the MyArmoury sales boards about a year ago, and the person wanted around $250 for it.
Edward the III by Hanwei was a nice sword. They occasionally come up on Ebay or myarmory boards.

What would be a typical- Or desired- blade length in a type XV?

I looked it up and found it was a single hand style.
At around a 25 inch blade, it might be possible with what I have on hand.
Longer, and it would have to wait until I have my gas forge at last, and a supply of the 5160 I plan to switch to for swords.

Provided all of my plans work out, and I actually manage to set things up the way I want.

Thanks Cian, the kultofathena blade is very interesting. But looking at the pictures it looks like it will require a lot of finish work to get it looking good. I'm definitely looking at the others you listed as well, most are unfortunately out of my price range.

Albion sells some very high quality bare blades... I have two of them and am very impressed (Type X & Type XVI). They have a Type XVIII longsword blank for $240, which is probably close enough to a XV that with a little reshaping should work pretty well. The total length is 42.5" with a 34" blade. It does require a final grind and polish however, but the lines are very crisp to begin with.

This is exactly what I had hoped to do in the future.

If you're not going to change the shape or put sharp edges on it, all you might need are some sanding blocks and a bit of elbow grease...

Speaking as a very experienced knifemaker, I think you'd find that approach more difficult than you think.

I've made knives from barstock, using only files and sandpaper.
Modified existing blades that way, too.

Its...A LOT of work and time.

It can be done...If you don't mind spending literally months on a single blade.

Have you looked at Valiant Armoury? Good reviews...I have their Crusader Arming sword and I love. AND it comes with a nice scabbard. Sonny will also do custom colours.

I'd talk to Sonny over at Valiant Armoury (www.valiant-armoury.com) - I think that's the link. At your price point he could probably do up a nice package...all of their swords come with leather covered wooden scabbards with nice details, especially at that price point.

Edit: I should've read all of the posts, Mlanteigne already suggested it, so I'll second that.
