Were gambesons quilted or layered in 1361 AD?

Post by Aaron »

Howdy,

Here I go again...I made the vest and I'm going to be working on the arms (after I make these 1500 AD shoes for my wife...don't tell her!).

Now, are quilted (tubes) gambesons period to 1361 AD? The rest of my kit is based off of the Wisby digs and events within that time-frame (1350-1370 AD). Does the quilted gambeson fit?

Yes, I'm rather enjoying the quilted gambeson. It took quite some time to make, but frankly the technology involved is just two pieces of cloth, a stick and something to wad up in there. The vest fits wonderfully (for a first try) and I find it incredibly LIGHT and resistant to bludgeoning weapons. This is a case where I think something COULD have existed...I'm asking for your help to direct me to evidence that it DID exist.

It was just the stone-age technology involved in making this thing that got me thinking that it MUST have existed.

-I'm a true SCAer..."it MUST have existed",

Aaron

PS: Three more days and I'll be home!
