Anglo-Saxon fibulae--steel pins?

Post by Saverio »

Hey everyone, I've noticed that many sites offer fibulae with steel pins. Was this ever done in period? I've only seen all bronze/brass fibulae, though I certainly haven't seen them all.

I suspect what's happening is that the bronze/brass/copper alloy is better preserved and prettier. Lots of brooches and such with iron/steel(?) pins, copper alloy buckles with iron tongues, and other combinations/homogenizations. Bronze always looks nicer in a photograph than a lump of rust. Image
