build a cheap forge

I put a forge together the last couple weeks. I took a total of about 6 hrs to make it, spread out over a couple weeks because I procrastinate

! I used scrap from a scrap yard, crap laying around the shop, a few new pipe fittings, junk from trash bins at my apartments and storage shed and my wife's hair dryer "duck" taped to the whole thing

I used regular charcoal in it the other night and was quite impressed. I've used other larger and better looking coal forges, and this one worked just as good. Kinda hard to look at, and too small to do much over 3/4" rod, but it's only for a small patio of an apartment. It's enough to end my severe lack-of-forge withdrawals!
Anyways, I always see people asking about forge plans and costs etc....
Well, this should show you what you can do with a little scrap, trash, charcoal and and a lot of welding rods. If you want more explicit instructions, email me.

PS...I used it to heat treat my repousse chisels I made from 1/2" A-2 tool steel with just ordinary charcoal and JGraham manning the duck

Man, that's the nuttiest blow dryer I've ever seen! The forge looks good Krag. So, have you tried it with any cool plate projects yet?

I bet you could take the dryer apart and wire around the heating elements.

I have some 1/8" plate left...I'm sure I'll be raising something...It'll probably end up an ash tray, though!

Yes, BUT: My wife would be barbecuing me on it if I tore apart her hair dryer! I figure it's the end of the semester, I ought to be able to find plenty of them at garage sales.

It won't see any use this weekend, but some of our neighbors are pretty much full of bullshit. If I dry them out properly, they ought to burn quite nicely

Well, I'm fix'n to head out to Steppes Warlord...better get quack'n if I want to get the flock outta here by 5pm
