Perforated steel

Post by Hob »

I've received the happy news that the first rapier helms mass order has shown up in texas and is going to be shipped out in the next couple of days. Of course, this means I need to get cracking on finding the perforated steel for the faceplate. There was a post on here a few months ago about the thickness/hole-size/offset that others had used in the past. Could whoever posted that info repost it?

Here's the helms: http://members.home.net/agormanshaw/

This is from th SCA Corp rapier rules:

"C. Rigid Material: puncture-resistant material that will not significantly flex, spread apart, or deform under pressure of 12 Kg applied by a standard mask tester, repeatedly to any single point. Examples of rigid material are:
* 22 gauge stainless steel (0.8 mm)
* 20 gauge mild steel (1.0 mm)
* 16 gauge aluminum, copper, or brass (1.6 mm)
* one layer of heavy leather (8 ounce, 4 mm)

ii. The face must be covered by either 12 kilogram mesh (e.g, a standard fencing mask) or perforated metal. Such metal must not have holes larger than 1/8" (3 mm) in diameter, with a minimum offset of 3/16" (5 mm) and shall also meet the definition of rigid material."

Hope that helps!

LOGOS just got a piece. Maybe he'll post where he got his from.

Keep in mind that individual kingdom laws are likely to be more restrictive than the CORPORA. I am unsure about rapier rules, since I am not a rapier fighter, but if the armour standards for heavy fighting are any indication...

Even the small differences are important when you're getting inspected Image

Go to www.mcmaster.com

type into the search box 9255T631 and hit return. It is the sheet metal that meets the standard listed by the Corporate rules for perforated steel.
Alternately, you could search under "perforated steel sheet" (with no quotes) to see more options.

Price is $37.55 for a 36" x 40" sheet of 16 ga with 1/8" holes of the appropriate spacing.

for stainless steel:

9358T141 (which is twice the price)

These come in 3 foot by 40 inch sheets. They do take credit cards.

Are there still helms available? Which ones? Do you know the price precisely yet? What gauge are they? Which halms can be equipped with a pierced plate?

Thanks,

Thanks Kevin, that's perfect.

Jgalak, this isn't quite what you seem to think it is. Nothing is in stock, but there will probably be a second mass order going out later. For the details on the mass order, look at http://www.geocities.com/cadetem/
