learnt at practice

Post by Guest »

So, I finally got all dressed up in heavy and fought on Sunday... It was awesome! Way cooler than even I remembered it.

So I was fighting with a fellow fighter, and he thought it would be great to work on saber for a while, cause I was a fencer and he thought I would be good at it, and he needed practice...

First thing... I was not good at it... but it was fun...

But anyways... I was fighting... and instinctively I swiped at a flat snap with my off hand (in a street hockey glove)... Ouch.

So, the most important thing I learned on Sunday was "NO! You don't do that!" No more off hand parries against rattan. Lesson learned. :D

Fought for like 3 or 4 hours... It was awesome. Thanks to everyone who has been pushing me to get into armour.

Yay Broadway !!!

Glad you had fun. I haven't fought in a long time, and I'm kind of thinking in that direction myself.

If you want to see something REALLY silly, watch sword/board fighters try and fight single "broadsword" with their right hands!

Most of us are somewhat comfy wiht doing it left handed, due to the loss of sword arm.. but how often do you practice "saber" style with a sword in your _right_ hand? Thats something that seldom occurs.

(Watched a one handed pole armer take out a one handed (right handed) saber-oid fighter one day.. that was freakin hilarious.. it ended when the pole fighter rested the haft on his shoulder, blocked with the butt for a while, got an opening, and simply whipped his hand down and brought the head round-the-horn and into the other guys helmet).

Logan,

Lewis Moore made the bulk of it... I made the lamellar vest.
His website: http://members.aol.com/knightsarmoury/k ... ry_001.htm

Pic of my kit... flattened out like a pancake:

add spaulders to that... hide the lamellar under the gambeson, and make it not so flat, and that's what I look like armoured up.

Heh, I tried on Matt's stainless leg's to see if that was the size Lewis was gonna make me that day we took the horses over. My rig should be done soon, I'll need to learn how to post pic's on the archive.

it wouldnt have hurt if you were not in violation of the rules and actually had your free hand legally protected. bad marshals!

i have my guys practice saber fighting all the time. it teaches the student to watch the weapon instead of the things that do not matter (like arms, legs, heads, feet, hips, etc). once they learn to do that they will not fear the sword and they will learn that they dont move that fast, usually. so keep practicing saber (both hands by the way) for about 10% of your regimen. oh, and wear the required armor next time.

when you make it down here for a practice i would be happy to go over some saber stuff with you.

So my question to you is, how did the lamellar cord hold up?

Thanks,

Og.

Ogetei,

The cord held up awesome. I did wear the lamellar under my gambeson though, so it took no direct hits from a sword. It shows no signs of fraying, and seems solid enough.
