Helmet Hunt! (x-post)

Post by Lucian Ro »

While I'm aware this is the Design & Construction board, I know some don't frequent the Off Topic board where I originally posted this.

As a few of you know, I'm in the market for a new helm, as I'm leaning more towards the Roman in my Romano-Brit persona.
I was thinking about a helm design that I saw a few years back from a
now defunct (I'm assuming) armoury whose name currently eludes me.
I'm thinking it might have been the Armor Store, maybe?
It was a Roman helm, 'Praetorian' I believe it was called, which had
very closely spaced cheek plates that joined by a locking pin.
I seem to remember the individual that wins Crown in the 'In Service to the Dream' video was wearing one.
Anyone familiar with the helm I'm attempting to describe? Anyone have
any pictures or the armoury name that I'm talking about?
I've been lusting over this design for years and now that I have
squirreled away the funds to purchase one, I cannot find the fellow.
Failing finding the above-mentioned armourer, I'd like to find pictures
and see if I could interest one in a commission on something similar ...

Hi,

Although I was one of the gentlemen in "In Service to the Dream" I have not seen it.

I know that I was in the finals in one of the Crowns that was shown on the video- I was in Red and lamellar, and had a late Roman styled stainless conical on (by Eldrid). Earl (at the time) Edric was the other- he had a Bascinet from Luther Anshelm on.

There may be another Crown on the tape- this one between Sir "The Loser" Gavin, and >now cause I got the pleasure of knighting him< Sir "The Winner" Francisc. Francisc wears a helmet made by Duke "The Awesomest" Guy. Guy's helmets are very sturdy, and made from 12 ga steel, that he hammers with his popeye sized arms. They also have the closure at the front like you are talking about.

The helm from the Armour Store is similar but different. GuntherofOrkney who posts here occasionally used to make helmets with them, and I think is making helmets again. Check with him, and see if he might be able to make one for you- I know that he does nice work. You can send him one of those new private messages.
Tell him you want a helmet like Riley's (I think that is what you are looking for- he'll understand).
