Hi all,
I am just trying to ascertain a few things about 15th century garb. Now when I say 15th century I mean around 1400.
http://www.thearma.org/arttalk/at54.htm
Here is a picture of the armoured (hard?) kit I am going for, which I think the general consensus of people consider to be dated close to 1400. SO if you think you have anything garb wise, for a male, in a link or picture could you please show me.
I am also interested in colours that were used and am curious to know if suade would be a suitable material. I also believe furs were used as trim (cuffing etc) - if so what sort of animal furs were they?
My partner is so kindly making the garb for me (isnt she sweet) and I think she wants to go more nobility in appearance than commoner but whatever it will prob come down to my own preference. I have made the acceptance that I could end up wearing some tights though... <mumble>
Thanks,
Wyrm.

Best link I can point you at is From the Skin Out... Or Oh, my God, its 1403 and I have nothing to wear!

The webpage above will help with colors, though many of the depictions of white garments come from manuscripts illustrated in semi-grisaille (where people are drawn in contemporary clothing, with realistic flesh tones on their hands, faces, etc., but the clothing is drawn only in white and grey). So -- it's not meant to indicate that white outerwear was that fashionable in the 15th century, only that depictions of such are an artistic convention of the time.
I'm not sure where you plan to use suede, but other than perhaps a pouch or purse, it's not terribly suitable for clothing or accessories for the early 15th century. Fur was used to trim and line men's houppelandes; these generally seem to be lighter-colored furs.

It's not really "tights" so much as either braies & chausses or joined hose.

There's lots of MSs of the right time at the gallica.bnf.fr site.
Here's a few that should be about right, I've been guessing 1400-1410 or 20:
http://gallica.bnf.fr/scripts/Consultat ... O=08100285
http://gallica.bnf.fr/scripts/Consultat ... O=08100014
http://gallica.bnf.fr/scripts/Consultat ... O=08100022
http://gallica.bnf.fr/scripts/Consultat ... O=08100023
http://gallica.bnf.fr/scripts/Consultat ... O=08100028
http://gallica.bnf.fr/scripts/Consultat ... O=08100029

http://gallica.bnf.fr/scripts/Consultat ... O=08100081
http://gallica.bnf.fr/scripts/Consultat ... O=08100082
Also, if you can get to Paris (or order the guide):
http://www.louvre.fr/louvrea.htm
Click Exhibitions, and Paris 1400.
Or in french: http://www.louvre.fr/archives/paris1400 ... index.html
Go take pictures for me!

Eh. Crap. Seems they've renamed everything.
So, go to (in case they change things again):
http://gallica.bnf.fr
Click on:
Or go to:
http://gallica.bnf.fr/themes/ImaMA2.htm
Specifically, you want:
Boccace, Des claires et nobles femmes - Français 598
Grandes Chroniques de France - Français 73
Guiard des Moulins, Bible historiale - Français 3
Guiard des Moulins, Bible historiale - Français 4
Guiard des Moulins, Bible historiale - Français 9
Guiard des Moulins, Bible historiale - Français 10
Tristan de Léonois - Français 97
Tristan de Léonois - Français 100
Tristan de Léonois - Français 101
Some of the other manuscripts are probably good, but those are specifically the ones I've pulled images from for women's wear of the early 15th century. Eventually, you look at enough images, and you'll be able to date something pretty decently just by looking at the style of painting and clothing.
Enjoy! Give yourself some time - the Gallica site is wonderful.
