Armoring at pennsic?
I know this is a long shot, but I've gotta ask...
I'm gonna be at pennsic for both weeks and would really like to spend some time the first week working on something that I normally don't have time to do... such as making a pair of wisby gauntlets.
So here's my proposal for any armorer merchants... for those that spend your spare time on-site making stuff to sell, how about selling a little bit of your time as a guide and some .035 and .045 spring steel. I'm not trying to get these on the cheap, rather I want to do the work and it's been on my todo list for many months. I've got the gloves, padding, leather and pattern. I just need the metal, a way to cut it, and perhaps a little advice on technique.
Is anyone game?
Regards,

Rather than trying to do it onsite an an event with a half-assed shop available and make-shift tools...
Why not talk with one of the folks in Milwaukee or Doug Strong in Hawthorn Woods. I could think of numerous hoorors that could occur during an on-site project like the one you have mentioned.
I would gladly offer my assistance/shop if I had one. Mine is not together yet after our move last fall. Other things have taken precedence.
Perhaps one of them could assist you in your goal and the location (a complete and functioning shop) would be a much better setting to complete a project.
You will be much happier with the results if you use the right tools and materials.

Milwaukee isn't going to be a good bet. Cad's shop is moving the 31st, Leif's shop (which isn't really a shop . . .) isn't in any condition to take on visitors, I don't think Aaron, Randy or Rob have a new place lined up, and I certainly can't armor my way out of a paper bag in my shop, so I would look for people in your area.
Maybe you should talk to Gruber. He works in 1050 steel a lot and if he's not busy (heh, right) you might be able to ask for advice or even help.

It's up to you now.

I'm just looking to find something to do other than sleep late and take frequent naps. Or rather something to do between those activities.
If this can't be arranged at pennsic then I'll ask around to find someone in the chicago area this fall. And while there are always better tools and methods, time and determination can make up for those to some degree. Even if I don't get very far on them, just getting the metal and cutting it would be a great start.
btw, Brian, are you going to pennsic this year? If so, we should get together and drink some coopers sweet iced tea. I love that stuff on a hot day.

He's heading to Mineapol . . . umm . . . Mineapolis . . . Is that right? I can barely spell Milwaukee, and I live a hair north of it. Anyway, he's heading to MN to be with his family. That's the extent of what I know. You're better off talking to him or Aaron and the like. We'll miss him, but we understand family comes first.

Oh yeah... I forgot about that. I will be in Minneapolis in September. I may just have to look him up.
