Request for knife throwers

Post by polarbearforge »

Greetings all! I'm looking for some knife throwers to give me some input on some of their throwing knife preferences. Ultimately, it may lead to some product testing. Please don't ask the details yet, it won't be for a few monthes. I'm interested in opinions on throwing knives right now, not spears, axes, etc...

Questions:
1.How many hours a week do you spend throwing or intend on throwing?
2.What is your favorite style of throwing knife? (If double edged, why do you feel this might be better?)
3.If you already have a set, how thick are they?
4.What do you use as a target?
5.Do you throw from the handle or from the blade?
6.How sharp do you prefer the cutting edge on a throwing knife?
7.What is the maximum you would spend on a set of 3 throwing knives?
8.What is the maximum you would spend on a set of 3 throwing knives if they were warrantied for moderate abuse?

Thanks in advance for any feedback I can get.

Jamie

1. I probably spend about 2 hours a week throwing when the weather is nice. When it's cold I tend to throw much less if at all. I'm purely in it for recreation.

2. My preferred throwers are symmetrical along the length, and without an edge, but a sharp point. They're made by Smith and Wesson.

3. My large knives are a little over 12" long and 0.16" thick. The small ones are a tad over 7" long and ~0.1" thick.

4. I use 2x4s glued face to face.

5. I throw from the handle or the blade, depending on what distance. If I had to choose, I probably throw predominantly from the handle.

6. Since the knives have no edges they are low maintenence and don't require much sharpening. I do true the point with a fine file on occaision.

7 & 8. I really don't have an answer for these.

The best throwing knife that I have ever used is very diferent than normal sca use. Long skinny single edge blade with the very tip curving to the back. When you throw it it is backwards. With a little bit of practice it is very hard not to get good with them. My wife stuck it on her very first throw ever.

I spent several years throwing about 1 hour a day on the average into a suspended log (end grain).

I threw about a dozen *different* blades of different shapes and styles each time as I was trying to train myself to throw *any* knife and not just one particular knife.

Hmm I'm back in the country again I can set up a target and not worry about the neighbors and their kids...

1.How many hours a week do you spend throwing or intend on throwing?
I, like most people, am a recreational thrower, so it depends upon my mood and the weather. At an active time, I might spend 2-3 hours a day throwing, a couple of times a week.

2.What is your favorite style of throwing knife? (If double edged, why do you feel this might be better?)
I don't have a preference for either single or double edged blades; I look for a knife with a good balance, a good weight, and between 7 and 15 inches in length.

3.If you already have a set, how thick are they?
I have dozens of throwing knives, they vary between 1/8" and 1/4" thick. The 3/16 and 1/8 inch blades tend to stick better. The thicker blades are the ones I tend to like the least; they're just too heavy, too over-engineered. A good knife is a simple knife.

4.What do you use as a target?
End grain is best, but I've used everything from live trees to pressure treated 4x4s stuck upright into the ground.

5.Do you throw from the handle or from the blade?
I can throw from either, but my preference is to throw from the handle.

6.How sharp do you prefer the cutting edge on a throwing knife?
Dull. I'm not trying to cut something, I'm trying to stick the knife in the target.

7.What is the maximum you would spend on a set of 3 throwing knives?
$100-125 USD.

8.What is the maximum you would spend on a set of 3 throwing knives if they were warrantied for moderate abuse?
$100-125 USD.
