Starter armor, whataya think?

Post by accdntprone »

Well, I just became unemployed for a while, so I have some time on my hands. (Hands that are quite healed up now btw) I got a few things to finish up, then I have been thinking of trying to develop a good "newbie kit". You know, the very first set of armor for somone who really wants to fight sca heavy but cant throw lots of cash at (and does not want to wait 8 to 10 months for) armor. Somthing like, really simple 2 pc spangen (there are some pics of my basic newby helm running around out there somewhere) a leather gorget, canvas and steel coat of plates with some sort of shoulder protection, leather arms and legs with simple one piece knees and elbows, and maybe a bit of steel under the leather along the thigh and forarm where ya get hit alot. round shield with basket, rattan sword with basket, and ether hockey gloves or really simple leather half gaunts. Whatcha think? How much should said kit be sold for? Do you think new fighters would like such a kit, or would most of them rather piece me there armor togeather? (I didnt like cobbleing togeather my first kit, cause I wanted to start NOW)

Blacksword out of Trimaris was one of the first I saw that had a starter set for about $300...

Waldryk has a srarter set for like $350

Illusion has a nice budget set for $250

hope that helps some

The lower the price you can put on it, the better, from a "get 'em on the field" viewpoint.

In our barony's search for the cheap loaner gear (gotta be super-spiffy, but can't cost money), we keep coming up against the problem of the guy who won't afford to buy his own gear. (Not "can't", but "won't".)

I think the starter set is an idea that has a lot of merit. Illusion uses a body bracelet for part of theirs. This is a very fast thing to make and gives decent protection. It is certainly faster than a full Coat of plates. With Rons Simmons, you can put together a kit most new folks would look decent in and still be able to afford.

-Beginner's helm (basic spangen - I would do a full face.)
-simple elbows
-simple vambraces
-body bracelet
-demi-gauntlet
-basket hilt
-shield basket
-steel legs
-simple gorget like Rainald's pattern

I would let folks do their own strapping. A coat of plates would be available for additional money.

All around, I would love to see someone offering this sort of thing for new fighters. But I am not willing to put in the effort to make it.

Just my thoughts.

-Patrick
