Darnit, I need to make greaves that include knee protection!

Post by Nomad »

Okay guys, I need to dump my HDPE legs (sorry Dark Victory, they've done well by me so far but I just need to upgrade now!). I would like to make greaves that will come up high enough to cover my knees out of leather. I have plenty of veg-tanned leather on hand so if you guys want to help me out please do! I know steel isn't required for the knees, and hardened leather does such a very nice job protecting my torso so please hook me up guys!

Shovel grieves are what you are asking for. They are shaped very similarly to bazubands and are not all that difficult to make.

Unfortunately, I don't have a pattern to give you as I have never had to make any. However, if you look at a bazuband pattern, it will give you a good starting place.
With regards,

Bazubands arent really the answer because of the way they cup around the back of the elbow. You cant keep your knees bent like that. The shovel greave does come around to protect the three points of the knee but it isnt as deeply dished as a bazuband is. Dish the knee and bend the sides around, you wont need to split the leather and stitch it. Its just not that deep. But you can do it, it's not that hard.

Didn't Uilleag post a tutorial on these ? I know he did on the bazubands, thought there was one on the shovel greaves also.

I think they are on his website: houseofthewolf.com

He is en-route from Gulf Wars right now.

Yeah, I don't know what happened to the links to his tutorials, but they used to be there. :(

If I'm not mistaken, he has the tutorials on his web site. Check out the House of the Wolf site and see if they aare there.

Here is part of it without the pics. http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB2/ ... man#411690. I believe Thomas Hayman has the rest of the tutorial.

I do but no pics. Uilleag changed the URl for his site when he modified my version. I saw it on his site not so long ago but it appears he has removed it.

Greetings all.

I removed the tutorials from my website, because they were so successfull that they were detracting from orders.

Due to overwhelming popular demand I have made the following decisions.

The first I will be posting the Shovel greave tutorial back onto my website tomorrow morning after I have unpacked the car....Just got in and I'm going to bed when I finish this beer.....

I also decided to offer my bauzubands and shovel greaves again. These will be listed on my web page tomorrow. This decision was made to to an overwhelming, almost resounding demand of armour wearers every where.

My email has been flooded with requests and I was personally approach well over a score of times at Gulf Wars. With such a popular demand for these products, i cannot turn away from the requests of so many. (and here I thought we had flooded the market! LOL)

A good, inexpensive product that is readily avaiable is rarely out of style. ;)

I liked them.

Excellent because while a tooled pair of your shovel greaves would be wonderful, I can't afford to spend a single penny right now, and have a half hide of veg tanned leather and assorted tools, so this really helps out a starving fighter in need. :-)
