My money is on Viscount Sir Eric of Chester. First GA warlord, 1st GA Prince, and looking to be 1st king. But I'm biased since he is my knight.
I have not seen a list of who all are fighting, but along with Eric, I know Sir Radu & Sir Elazar are fighting, and both are formidable. Regardless, I think it will be a list filled with talent, and I would encourage all to attend this historic event. Should be a great weekend!

Not sure if a list has been released yet or not.
I have two squire fighting, Martin von Augsburg and Jon the Tall. I biased here, but think both could go deep in the list if they are on their game.
Have to put Eric in the serious contenders list along with Radu, Count Seth, Sir Rashid, Sir Caillin, and Sir Rey (if they are in the list). Sir Elazar looked very sharp when I saw him in December and I would expect him to be one of the last few out there. If Sir Michael of the Mace enters the list I wouldn't bet against him. I honestly think any of the above could get on a roll and take the list.
On the unbelted side Rian, Edward, and Brandr could wreak havoc in the list if they bring their "A" game. Sorry Uric I haven't seen you fight lately so I am not sure where to rate you.
Just have to see how the draw goes and who has the endurance for the tourney. I understand it is double elimination best two out three for each fight.

I know the Knights from Grey Niche that are fighting are Myself, Count Padruig and Viscount Mike the Mace.
Others that I've herd of were Viscount Cailin, Viscount Elizar, Viscount Eric, Count Feneris, Count Seth, and Count Radu.
I'm guessing Viscount Camric sent in a letter also.
I know several letters have been denied and I haven't herd one way or another on mine so I guess it's really up in the air until I do. Looks to be a interesting list most people are guessing around 35-40 people and double elimination every round so it's going to be a long list. I know there are a few strong unbelted fighters that could throw a monkey wrench in the mix also if they are having a good day so we'll see.

Of course, there's no way to know who is fighting yet - but here's a stab.
If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Elesar or Mike. Two guys for which I have not only no answer, but lack the question as well. Mike is coming off of a long layoff for injury - but he sure looked good a couple of months ago.
The Rest Of My "A List"
Count Radu, Count Seth, Viscount Rey, Viscount Eric, Viscount Camric, Viscount Caillin. All of these guys are plenty good enough.
Darkhorse that Scares the Hell Outta Me in This Format
Sir Rashid - See him fight a lot. He's awesome.
Unbelt to Watch Out For
Ryan Mulligan - Seems to be near the end of every list he fights in.
Some Unbelts That You Ignore at Your Peril
Urich (yeah, Vebrand, he's still good
), Brandr, Jon the Tall, John Whittom, Edward of Lyonsmoor, Uther von Ziemer, Cohair O'Duhn. All of thses guys can get hot and beat anyone in the list.

There's a lot of guys a simply don't know how they're fighting right now - like Earl Padruig, Count Wernherus, Syr Loric, and Sir Gethin come to mind as strong fighters that I can't get a feel for.

According to the rules of the list, all combatants must be 'acceptable' to the crown. This can be a subjective, and not objective determination, so it is by whatever standards the crown chooses. If it is because of the way you part your hair, you probably aren't going to be told.

Is that the current Meridian Crown? If not, who? Also, how long ago was Duke Bearkiller's first (Meridian) reign and his last one?Alcyoneus wrote:According to the rules of the list, all combatants must be 'acceptable' to the crown.
Westerners, we have forgotten our origins. We speak all the diverse languages of the country in turn. Indeed the man who was poor at home attains opulence here; he who had no more than a few deiners, finds himself master of a fourtune.

I would like to be there myself, to witness.
Depends on how many get sent in. Usually they get bounced for technical reasons - lapsed membership, newsletter subscription (a Principality requirement), residency requirement - that sort of thing. Sometimes it's for more personal reasons, but those are more rare around here.
morristh wrote:Anyone heard if Sir Bearkiller might give it a wack. I mean that in a way would be too cool to be the first king in two kingdoms--LOL
Last I heard was a resounding 'No!'. But that's second-hand from one of his squires.
Morgan wrote: I'd heard a rumor that supposedly over 200 people had sent in letters of intent. While I'm sure that was a gross exageration, it's possible that they would want to limit the list a little bit, for the sake of not having to fight all day for the entire weekend. LOL
Dude, you'd be hard pressed to find 200 authorized fighters in Gleann Abhann that fight in lists. From experience I would expect around 40. Even so, the autocrat has made contengency plans for low-light conditions.

We send Letters of Intent to the Crown of Meridies, the Coronet of Gleann Abhann, both Marshals and both Seneschales. My laser printer's working overtime.
I believe Bear's last reign ended in 1993.
Sir John the Bearkiller won't be fighting in it. He's interested, but his wife doesn't want to sit another reign and he won't fight for anyone else. He fought for someone else years ago and it didn't work out so well.

In a way thats too bad, but I understand it completely. I played last when this occured and I know it hurt him greatly. Still to see him King once again.
I am only one of zillions that has had his butt kicked soundly by his Grace, but I am a better man for it. I will always have fond memories of him and others of that era.

The issue with multiple people being denied was that letters were sent in BEFORE Duke Stephen published the requirements. So it was more of a "how can you meet the requirements when they have not been put forth" kind of thing.
I am not sure Camric is fighting, but if he is then he is definitely one to watch. We have a lot of good talent, so it will be a great list to watch.

The names I haven't seen (that I expected to) are
Duke Kane
Lachlann (from this archive)
Luther Von Ziemer (the bigger one)
Other than that, everything looks like I might have expected it to.
I am feeling like an old crusty at this point. I helped train several of these guys, though most of the time what they learned was to find a better teacher.
My own information is a little dated, but I would also say that the odds are best for Mike and Moose in the finals, fighting for Brenna and Bri. the list of folks is so distinguished that it is pretty much wide open.
Other that that, my personal guess is it will almost certainly have at least one (or probably two) in the finals with either a Hammerhold or Grey Niche Connection.
Regardless of who ends up in the finals, and eventually in the big plywood chair, honor will be heaped up someplace in the Delta, in really big mounds. This is a good bunch of folks.
How about Bri fighting for Radu? What a legend it might be if the first soverign of GA was queen by her own hand?
I am really, really sorry to miss this.
If I caught an intercontinental plane flight, do you think that I might be able to fight a bye fight or two?

I do indeed plan on fighting it, my consort is Viscountess Susanna Eisenrose.
Im not sure about Luther and Kane hasnt given me a straight answer yet.
If you hop a plane I at least will fight you Frieman, but I plan on doing that at Pennsic anyways.

Quite frankly, I forgot about Lachlann. Sorry. He could do some damage.
Kane really hasn't fought in a lot of lists in the last few years. That doesn't mean he couldn't do well, just there's really no way to gauge how he would stack up with this crowd. Really don't know if he's even interested in fighting this one.
Luther is a great fighter and I would just love to see him win one. He's one of the more talented melee fighters in Gleann Abhann. He's absolutely deadly with great weapons. I just don't like his chances in this format of list. Best two out of three each round could be real bad if his knees act up. With that being said, I'll probably draw him and he'll dropkick me right over the royal pavillion.
Bri is, well, indisposed at this time. I expect when the baby arrives she'll be back out there as soon as she gets the okay. I'll let her speak to when she expects to be back in, but I wouldn't be surprised to see her again in the fall (assuming she's not sitting on the throne after Moose blows us all away).
Can't speak for the powers that be, but I'm confident if you came all that way you should be able to find a bye or two.
Cheers,
Martin

Kane has been so inactive due to starting his own business and Ilissa's work schedule that I think it very unlikely he will come out. Sad.
Luther, as far as I know, intends to fight.
I, tragically am missing it as a combattant - I will show up and try to look as inspirational as possible on the sidelines. At 8 months pregnant, I no longer fit in my armor.

I don't know whether we were a special case, or you guys are, or what, but from what I recall, for AEthelmearc's first Crown, the entrants only had to be acceptable to the AEthelmearc royalty, not the Eastern royalty, and while the tourney was run and sponsored by the East (as the parent kingdom), it was fought under AEthelmearc laws and conventions, not Eastern laws and conventions (there was some conflict over that, and the Board ruled that it was AEthelmearc's game, not the East's).
Of course, having both sets of royalty, and their relevant officers, agree is always much better, so YMMV.

No, I don't think we're a special case. At least as far as fighting goes, GA rules and conventions are nearly identical to Meridian.
For those of you on the outside looking in - this is a very agreeable split. Everyone seems to have worked together very, very well. It was just time, that's all.
A NOTE FROM THE AUTOCRAT (who happens to be my wife
) - Frontage space on the list field for pavilions is strictly controlled. At this time she is anticipating a 10' limit per combattant of frontage (you can take up about as much depth as you want). If the list size is not great (and it's looking smaller than anticipated) then things might ease up somewhat. But she's not expecting to get a final list of who's in this thing until, at best, the week before.
Martin - beginning to wish the whole thing was over...

There are great fighters all over Gleann Abhann but if you are placing odds, in my opinion, you have to bet on the First Crown of Gleann Abhann being from Louisiana. I haven't seen Michael fight since his injuries and Viscount Rey is definitely a possibility.
However, from fighting them, there are a larger number of what I would call contenders from Louisiana including Seth, Radu, Camric and Elesar.
There are others who will do well and could definitely win. Earl Padruig, Viscout Eric and Lord Rian are all the ones that come to mind.
The 2 out of 3 format favors the better fighter.

While the Meridian Crown is pretty much letting GA run their own show (as it should be), it is a Crown tournament, not a Coronet list. Technically, the winner is not the Coronet's Heir, and it seems, well, odd for a Crown tournament to be supervised by any but a sitting Crown. This puts first Crown Lists in a singular category.
GENERALLY (since these are Board case-by-case decisions and not written in stone), the marshallate rules submitted as a part of the application packet for the new Kingdom are the ones used to pursue the first List. However, which set of Royalty has final say on combattants is something that is a bit more vague - by existing Kingdom laws and SCA Governing Documents, there is little a Coronet can do that cannot be overridden by his superior Crown. Calontir's first Crown was largely supervised and run according to Midrealm custom, as distant memory recalls (Alcy can probably remember this as well). Thankfully, these are rare enough occurances that usually the situation usually doesn't get that complicated.

Sir Gethin was having a good time beating on Wilhelm and I last weekend. I landed a couple but was on the receiving end on most.

One to keep an eye on will be Maximillian von Braun.
