Hourglass gaunts.

Post by MigueldZ »

Is there any evidence of solid (forge welded or raised from one piece) hourglass gaunts or were they all riveted together at the cuff?

Actually I think the forge welded, one piece raised ones are the extant examples. The riveted ones are modern and done for cost reasons.

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

Both are period.

Hm, that may depend on how you define 'hourglass'...

If you mean gauntlets from the late fourteenth century, I have yet to see an example of a cuff that was not formed from a single piece. If your definiton of hourglass includes the gauntlets from the first quarter of the fifteenth century, then there were cuffs made from two pieces.

Cheers,

What Zanetto said.

Of the ~20+ examples of 14th century gauntlets in the "hourglass" style of which I am aware.... none have a riveted joint at the wrist.
