Most Impressive Melee Units and why?

Post by Duke Icefalcon »

OK. This is just to rule out the home base bias...

They have to be from Kingdoms outside your own or your neighboring Kingdoms.

For example- I live in the East, so I cannot pick units from the East, Atlantia, or Aethelmearc.

My favorites are:

House Darkyard from the Mid- Large and well organized. It takes a great deal of leadership to run a unit this large for so long. Duke Brannos is a very charismatic man.

House Asgard from Trimaris- Great lineage of fine knights and strong fighters who work well together. Strong archers.

Western Spartans- Small unit who are disciplined and fully commited to the art of war. Great heroes in this unit.

I'd agree with Asgarde... love fighting those guys in Gulf Wars... lots of good scutum on scutum action....

Ebonwolf guys... hard fighters hard competitors, not hard feelings. You thump them, they thump you, no big deal either way.

Outlands Landschnect guys are really good.

Certainly not disagreeing what I've seen so far, and not trying to buff the helm of His Grace, but the Bloodguard guys are tough to roll up against. Helluva fight.

Thanks Morgan. Not trying to get a helm buffing either.... :)

I travel a bit in the SCA for business and always find it interesting to look at and hear about units that I do not encounter often. I think that it is right to give these guys cudos for the good job that they have done with their units.

I am also curious to hear of excellent units that I might not have heard of yet, due to my limited travel experience.

The Caidan Royal Army's 2nd Brigade...also known as the Iron Brigade of Calafia.

Maybe I'm just biased...but IMO it's truly a force to be reckoned with.

All of the warbands that make up the Iron Brigade are formidable, the best being Corvus, Drafn, The Orkneys and The Myrmidons (in no particular order).

The Tuchux of recent years. Their small unit tactics and Drilled decipline are tight. Not to mention they are hard hitters and chargers.

Remember; I am looking for groups outside your local area. I want to hear of units that have impressed you without any bias.

I hope this thread grows. I do not know much of the units on the west coast and I would like to know of them through the eyes of folks from other areas. It gives the best unbiased view.

BTW- I agree about the Tuchux. They have come a long way!

Cheers! :)

Well I cant tell where they are from or what houses their from but at Gulf wars I'm always impressed with the Middle kingdom and Glenn-ahbenn (sp) they fight great and have a uniform look to their ranks. Also there is no lack of skill in Calontier (sp). But again I cannot tell separate units.

The Great Northern Army form the East Kingdom....

They are quite possibly the MOST formidable group of fighters I have ever fought with and against in the Known World.

Feral VonHalstern and Balfar and Lucan have some great dedication and Leadership to keep that many people motivated, focused and dedicated to the single-minded task of consistantly fielding a quality Army every year.

I have explained it like this....

Many Kingdoms field great fighters that come together once a year to be an good Army.

the East fields a great Army that also has great fighters among it.

however minor it may seem....that is a big difference in philosophy and its what makes them so great.

(I fight with Darkyard often, and train with Brannos twice a week...so I cant pick them due to bias or I would wholeheartedly agree with you)

Calontir has 4 companies:
First company: Scutum wall and major artillary
Second company: Secondary shields and minor artillary
Third company: Skirmishers
Forth Company: Waterbearers

You will mostly see 1st, 2nd, and 4th companies at GW. We ussually don't have enough to feild skirmishers as well.

I'll say if Ice won't. I fought with Bloodguard at the last Gulf Wars. Tight, disciplined, and 100% aggresion. Great crew.

Well, I dunno. I see them at Estrella, and they were on the Aten/Outlands side I think ( 2 Estrella's ago)...I think someone told me they were Outlanders...

Well, the East is lucky to have several units of great note but currently I believe that VDK (out of the Northern Army) has become a very major player. They are disciplined, aggressive and most importantly, smart. They seem to have some thinkers on the field and react very well. They are my favorite unit to fight against. Always intense, clean and fun.

I have great respect for House Bloodguard and there is no doubt to the aggression and prowess of the members of that house but I only seem to run into them in the woods so it is hard to judge the overall stability and discipline of the unit. Regardless, they make my list because they are a tough, skilled opponent. Your Grace, does Bloodguard run any poles and/or spears? It's all sword and shield whenever I see you in the woods so I was just curious.

I am very excited to see the direction House Ebonwolfe takes over the next few years. I had the pleasure of meeting a few of the lads and they are great and I mean great on and off the field.

I am also in agreement with several of you that I think the Tuchux are looking solid. They have become a HIGHLY effective unit that plays well in most roles. The East has been using this unit to GREAT effect over the last few years. They are a fun fight without a doubt. It is obvious that they are working harder and smarter.

Sadly, I am not familiar enough with the other kingdoms units to make a call. I am not that well traveled.

The house has skill in poles and spears as well as sword and shield. This past weekend our house faced off against VDK as a matter of fact, using mostly spears. They are a solid unit, and Lucan gets much respect for his command prowess, both strategically and on the tactical level.

We just try to use the right form for the individual battle we are fighting in.

Cheers!

Your Grace,

Your Haus fought well in your absence. They showed both discipline and prowess. Your spears worked quite well together and Sir Konrad lead well.

Thank you guys for the compliments. Most kind of you to recognize the hard work we've been doing. I'd like to return the compliments to Bloodguard, having had a bunch of great scraps with those guys over the years. Also personal respect to Ice and others I've gotten the opportunity to meet. Great guys.
Sadly, I'd love to compliment other units that I've seen do great things over the years by name, but I dont know their names. Suffice to say that in my opinion the quality of fighting in the big battles has risen greatly over the past few years and I'm having a ball :)
