my Pioneer project

It took me a very long time to pick the project up where it stopped last year.

But I started it again, last friday was my first real day working as an independent armourer in my new but small & cosy workshop.

It will be the first of a series of early medieval helmets so:
Saxon Pioneer, Wencelaus, Norman, Viking, crusader, and barrel (pembridge like) helmet.

Now this helmet is rivetted, I'm working on forming the cross-bars using the Oxy-acetylene set and make the stylized wild boar for the top.

I only have to make hinges (i've already made the cheekplates) and- perhaps some rivetted mail.

The helmet is all mild steel 1,5mm and the most difficult part was making the rim strip fit on the lower nose part (1mm steel) - I used a specially formed chisel & leadblock.

The helmet was inspired by a picture I saw on the late website of Angelcynn and that one was made by Tim Noyes of the heronarmoury.

You know it is funny you posted that as I just saw the original pioneer helmet in storage a few days ago in london. They said it has a private owner so no pictures!!! Bummer. The helmet is so similar to the Coppergate helmet in York it was scary.
Good job on the helmet though. When I got through the coppergate helmet book and was suprised of the variation in thickness, between 1mm to 3mm's. Very cool
