Hide Glue workers: independent confirmation needed.

Post by Russ Mitchell »

I need somebody to please do the following:

1. Take dry veg-tan leather, and do a quickie hide-gluing together. Small piece is fine, and gluing should be done flesh-to-flesh.
2. Leather should be thin enough that two halves glued together form a typical office-wear belt thickness.
3. Glue seam should set for about an hour, and then be dunked into a container full of water for six hours.

I need somebody to please confirm the strength of the glue seam under these conditions: my first round of tests is done, and depending on the results, I may have an essay for the Archive within a week or so.

I think you may need to be a bit more specific about your intended process and your hide glue. The water-based rabbit hide glue that I use will not be even close to dry after "about an hour" at room temperatures.

Fair enough. Would you be willing to let it dry to your satisfaction, and then see how long the bond survives immersed in water? This ain't lab work... that'll be round two, but I need an outside eye to see whether I'm onto what I think I am, or whether, to quote one of my Hungarian professors, I've "discovered warm water."
