I'm making a coif from some 14g aluminum in 5/16" rings.
I've made a mantle before, so I know how to do expanding rings.
What is the best way to make a coif?
I was thinking of starting at the top of the head with a single ring. Then expanding it down to the temple-level.
From the temple, I was going to add the rest a a cylinder down to the neck- of course, with a hole for the face.
From the neck, I was going to expand out into a mantle (fairly short mantle).
I need to know some pointers on construction:
1:What is a good way to fit this thing to a generic size? (I want to be able to sell it at a booth, so I won't know who will buy it & how big to make it)
2: the grey areas for me is the size and shape of the face hole and how to make the transitions from the circle-expansions (the cap and mantle) to the cylindrical portion. I've tried this before (adding a neck collar to a mantle), but the bending involved always seems to contract the maile at the crucial point, making it much smaller.

When I made mine - I expanded down the cylender too (I was making it with an integral mantle). When sizing for the face, I just put the cap on and put a couple of garbage bag ties (the green twisty things) on the rings that bordered where I wanted the hole to be, and when weaving, left this section blank (I'm sure I've confused someone by now...)
As far as sizing it, I just make it to fit me, since I have a rather large noggin.
