Can anyone point me towards a guide specificaly designed towards padding a sallad and bevor, with the emphasis being on the best way to integrate the two ? Obviously the design and construction of the pieces will have an integral impact on the availably practises.
These things seem to fit pretty dern tight, hence my question. and yes, the intended use is SCA combat.
thanks,
Skillet
ps, will post pics of pieces if it will help

For the bevor, you want a padded liner that covers the face area. If you look at some original examples, you'll see a line of horizonal rivets across the top of the beavor,on the uppermost plate. 5,6 or 7 should do the trick. The bottom should be riveted to the area around the neck, one on each side should do.You'll probably want to acually rivet pieces of leather, a strip across the top, and a small piece on each side of the neck, to sew the liner to, so you can remove it and wash it as needed. As for the sallad, you'll either want a padded arming cap, with a leather suspension liner, or a leather strip riveted around the temples with a padded liner sewn to that. Thats the way I have it figured out, if I'm wrong someone please clue me in...Otto
Thanks for your input Otto.
The sides of this sallet seem a tad high, so I working on a fairly substantial coif to wear over an arming cap. If need be I may end up having to add some descending pieces if my mail / perhaps leather won't pass muster.
The Bevor seems well designed, of course it doesn't protect the back of the neck. Course, it's not the "back" I'm worried about.
Before I ran across this helm I had ordered a gorget from none other than your esteemed self senor Otto. I'm postulating that I may be able to modify the rear of that gorget into the bevor.
Interesting food for thought, as it might just be the ticket to provide the protection the lack of length of the sides of the sallet provide.
I think the word for that is serendipity. Either that or just plain old hopefull thinking.
course, the sooner I get that gorget the sooner I'll be able to come to grips with this conundrum.

Try this link for Steve's (somewhat) period liner.
