Some pic of my work
Hi
Now that i heve some photos of my work on the net i want to share them with you and you will tell me what i have done wrong.

Now i hope this shows up but if not here is the link
http://priv.ckp.pl/kuznia/index.htm
The helmet is my first advanced project(something more tham jus dishing a pice of scrap) Is made out of 2mm thick mild steel plate.
1 I know that the nasal if flat but i have no idea how to bend it
2 I know that the panels could ude more planishing but i have no decent planishing stake yet
3 It is only sanded with 100 grit paper and it shines because it is painted.
I would like your opinions and show me some mercy im only 17.....
<font color=blue>Edited to correct the picture reference -- case is significant, and the original was "dsc..." instead of "Dsc..." -- jt --</font>

Impressive. A planishing stake would help you out a bunch, and a little work on getting the shape of the nasal to look a little better would make that quite a nice little helm. Probably just running a crease down the middle of it would make it look almost right. Keep up the good work! Oh, and look up how to do pictures in html again. I had to point directly to the URL of the pics.

Looks like roofing nails to me. Zinc coated IMO

BTW:That is a very nice piece. I just finished my first Visby COP. Still working on my stump.

Excelent, better than my helm. O and im 14. The adeverage age of the modern armour is falling. Also, if i may, do you have the pattern im trying to make a simple skull cap and build everything off that.

From one newbie armourer to another, I think you've done a BLOODY good job on that helm. Sure, it ain't perfect, but I think it shows a really good understanding of basic armouring! One of the things I want to attempt soon is a Helm.. I'm thinking a Great Helm for starters, but Spagenhelms are also appealing.
Great job man!

Gocin,
First, a good effort. Your planishing is nothing to be ashamed of - on the contrary, it's quite excellent, especially for a first attempt.
The main areas you seem to be hitting trouble are in the frame, not the panels.
The point where one framing strip goes over the other is always difficult, because of the gap caused by the crossover. You have to either live with the gap or bend the metal to get rid of it, and neither look good.
In fact, I don't know of any historical helmet where they actually cross. Usually you either see a front-to-back strip with two side strips joining it at the top(with no overlap) or four strips all joining at the top. Earlier spangenhelms had some form of disk and spike at the top, which covered the join and enabled some overlap for fixing the strips at the top. These are fairly easy to make, and you might think about using them.
I'd say not to use aluminium rivets - they're just not strong enough to stand up to use. Use roofing nails - they're pretty much the same shape as the aluminium ones, but you have to cut them short to get a good size for rivetting.
The next thing I'd advise is to rivet with the flat heads inside, not outside, and learn how to make a domed head on a rivet. You can find out how here and there's more on spangenhelms here. These sites are going to change their URL soon, but I'll be letting everyone know when the time comes.
Make sure when you practice doming your rivets that you're only joining scrap metal - it takes a while to get it neat, and you'll probably waste quite a few while you're learning.
You can also buy domed headed rivets ready made, and the rivets you see on extant helmets are in fact just as good as the ones available commercially.
To shape the nasal, you can either flute it (there's a writeup on how to do that in the Armour Archive's armouring essays), or make a separate nasal (which was often done historically), and shape that. You might thik of decorating it, too. That was fairly common.

You forgot to include "kuznia" in your link. You had "http://priv.ckp.pl/images/Dsc00044.jpg" instead of "http://priv.ckp.pl/kuznia/images/Dsc00044.jpg"
You are doing great work. I wish I would have started when I was your age!

Gocin, how well do the shoulders on that breastplate fit? They look a little thin to me. Or perhaps that is just the angle of the photo? Do you have shoulder protection to go with that piece? I'm wondering if there is going to be a problem with gapping between the breastplate and your shoulder armor. One more thing, post a picture of the back of the piece so we can see the construction methods you used. Overall a good effort.
