Finger guantlet design.

Post by Mykaru »

I'm currently trying to decide on my attachment method. I am making finger guantlets designed to be *internal* in a glove. I can a) rivit through the neoprene/plates/glove or b) stitch the neoprene to the plates and then stitch the glove separately or c) stitch neoprene, plates and glove as 1 unit. I'm currently leaning towards c, however I thought I'd check to see if anyone has any experience with internals.

Just so I follow, Mykaru-dono, are we talking about something that, when it's done, would look like tekko?

I'd love to see pics when you are done.

No, something that looks like gloves. Of course, gloves *are* appropriate with kote/tekko. 8)

Well, there's that titanium set that Gaston made for rebated steel a while back (too lazy to look up the thread).

I think that I just did what you want to do, I took a set of welding gloves, covered them with tool leather like a "mitten", strips of leather on the fingers...

But decided to make an internal glove for reinforcement too.

What I did was the following (and it worked danm well!):

I took a piece of industrial felt, placed my hand on it and drew a line around my hand... cut that out and glued a similar piece of canvas on what was gooing to be the top of the hand (on the felt of course) .

Then I made 8 - 10 ( for each finger) lames of 1 mm aluminium and drilled 2 holes in each lame.
The lames were just bowed a bit like "("

Stiched the lames on the fingers with some overlap...
I used flat, nylon saddle yarn for this - make sure to heat all your knotends (melt them a bit with a lighter) otherwise they will come loose (they allways do!)

Works excact like fingered gauntlets....
I did not attach this internal glove, it stayed inside the welding glove by itself.

I made them as extra safety reinforcement , just for the right (sword) hand for the last Hastings battle.

It worked well

Questions about this? Please ask...

I had forgotten about that. Not exactly what I'm planning, but related.

From years of wearing finger gauntlets I have learned that the thumb should be attached to the hand with a rivit to prevent thumb jam and that the pointer and the pinkie need larger plates. The middle and ring finger need less protection as their outside neighbors help cover them.

When you have it figured out put me down for a pair in black.
