The quillions are turned down from 1.25 machine brass rods, tapped on the inside (towards the blade) with .5 in threads and screwed into the main body of the guard. A set screw (.25) goes through the guard to hold it in place. An eight sided design is milled into the ends on the outside. These are 1.25 inches in diameter to comply with SCA regulations. The pommel matches this detail.

I have often thought of making a "form" out of PVC, and removing a section from each end, making a () shape. If I were able to stitch the leather over this, it would look a lot more correct than a straight O shape. Granted, there would be "dead" space, but I could either fill that up, and/or the sword wouldnt fit in there anyway.

Don't use PVC. It's too thick and it will fracture from the concussive force of rattan combat.

Cian,

I would be much interested in knowing the rattan in such a sword holds up to the stresses of combat.

As compared to your regular swords that is... Some folks swords only last a couple of weeks no matter how they make 'em.

I swing like a kindergartener. It would last forever in my hands. I may loan it out to some heavy hitters for a while and see what damage they can do to it.

It does have a couple of modifications over what many people do:
1) You may have gleaned it from the drawing, but it's got siloflex on the striking surface of the blade edge. (some people apply leather or rubber).
2) The cross-hilt is drilled over-sized so the rattan hilt can be beefier. The hilt (and only the hilt) will have epoxy applied. It will be cut exactly to size and will be pressed into place using my bearing press. (this is the part where I keep my fingers crossed).
3) The blade is extra thick at the base. The problems I've seen is the swords snapping just above the hilt at the base of the blade. Though these tend to be narrow staves where people have removed way too much rattan for the grip.
4) The binding i'm going to use is 3m industrial strapping type with the fibers going in 2 directions. And is going to be applied with a device that applies 20-30 lbs. of constant pressure while it's wrapped around the sword to prevent bubbles or loose spots in the tape. The closest thing I can think of to having it shrink-wrapped.

You are right Cian...I do believe I soiled myself.

Very cool looking design and one that I would love to be kept up to speed on. Heck I am interested in having one so please keep us posted on how things are developing. Once they are ready for us mere mortals I may be cool enough to work out a purchase. But once I had it I am afraid I might not want to hit anyone with it and just hold and wave it around.

Seriously outstanding work.

Take care,

Brogan.

Cians sword design got me to thinking. Would it be possible to build an alluminum 2-piece mold that was esentially the sheath for the sword you were trying to build, insert a piece of siloflex and fill it with hot motor oil under pressure? You should be able to stretch the siloflex like vaccume forming in reverse and make a tapered shell that could then be bonded over a tapered core of rattan. The rattan could be shaped on a tweaked gun-stock lathe.

Just an idea.

Sean,

I'm inclined to think that the effort would only be worth it if it would produce a sword that would withstand a great deal more abuse than an ordinary rattan sword. Great idea if it does though.

Cian, I guess I wasnt clear enough. I was thinking of using something in the 8oz. range (stiff enough to hold its shape) and using the PVC as a wet form. Not leaving it in there permanantly, simply a "last" for the scabbard to hold its shape. The PVC OD would be the max diam. sword which would fit. By cutting out a strip, and forming the shape like (), I would get a form which appears to have much more width than length, approximating a real scabbard better. Does that make sense now?

Well I finely completed my project...

An SCA version of the Kirkburn Sword...

“This sword was an important archaeological relic found in 1987 during the excavation of a nearby Iron Age grave, dateable in the 3rd century BCE. The Kirkburn Sword, as it became known, is described by the British Museum as "probably the finest Iron Age sword in Europe". Its handle is assembled of 37 pieces of iron, bronze and horn and decorated with red glass. Its scabbard is made of iron and polished bronze, decorated with a scroll pattern in the style of La Tène culture, with red glass studs and insets.â€
