Yup, I believe that's one of their warlords. I used to camp with the Pentamere Free Company down the road from them. While we tried to do a 14-15th CE fighting unit they were a LARP group visiting over the years. After having been invited down to a couple of their parties I found I really enjoyed their take on things. They knew they were 'visitors' and worked it into their 'schtick'. Outside of their walls they were a fighting unit free for hire, inside they reminded their folks that although they were fey folk (their game) stepping outside their walls without being 'concealed' would result in their neighbors mobbing them, beating them down with iron impliments and staking them out. It was a wonderful compromise from my point of view. Inside the walls was theirs (and they'd paid for it) .. outside the walls was a different set of rules they needed to be wary of ... it also added a bit of excitement for 'em.

Good folks and despite what the picture might look like, I was grinning the entire time to have able to face off with them the Tuchux and the Angles ... I only had a few days to spend at Pennsic and I got to spend 'em with folks I love off the field and in armour on the field!

Maybe something to inspire the ladies? Newest version of kit, now with hidden legs and period footwear. Not at 100%, but getting closer:

Image

I will be transitioning to a wooden shield (from metal) as well. I WAS going to remove the pteruges and go to a chain skirt or aketon for more authenticity, but, well, I've become attached. Eventually the baskethilt will go, but I am just not up to retraining myself to fight just yet.

PS - ignore the timestamp, it's not accurate - actual date of kit is 10/8/2011. Photo credit to Koressa Bowman.

Can I just point out how far Varukh has come in the last year? That guy has inspired this newb to better equipment and more importantly and open mind to the wisdom that can be found here. My first kit is better for it( that's meant as props man ;p ).

Here is a better pic of the new kit, though this shield is shorter now, to conform to our Crown rules, though to be honest, after looking at a bunch of effigies for 1250 - 1275, the shorter one is actually more correct. I found more shields that were shoulder to mid-thigh, than anything else. And thats what this is now after I got it down.

Tossing one up from this past Combat of the 30. I'd rushed up on this gentle to buy time for my squire brother, Baron Gregoire, who was his primary target with such as his ransom. This lion's caliber as fighter is apparent as he caught my movement to engage him and struck me a most stunning blow before I could begin to ensnare his fearsome mace. This first stout blow upon me, which almost succeeded in driving me downward into the dirt and besting me if it hadn't been for my Knight and senior squire coming to overwhelm him. Our entire team was required to take this lion down ... and we found him to be a most welcome guest and most generous with his ransom.

Duke Valharic is one of those guys who looks like his muscle density is about twice that of a normal human. When he hits someone you can watch the shockwaves radiate out across their flesh. Utterly terrifying.

I love the barbarian sneaking out of the bushes behind him.

OMG THAT'S HAMISH?

No wonder the pic is from so far away, the photog probably didn't want to get caught in the crossfire.

Thanks! But sadly, it is rubber hose. The shield was made the day before the event in a rush. Until I get the money to get more wood and rawhide for a new wood shield to replace the one that broke, I am gonna have to use this 'un.

Yeah man, your rubber hose is taking away from all the duck-taped awesome of the rest of the thread. If only you'd done the authentic thing and covered it in leather. Cause that's what old fashioned people did. Ask anyone.
