Swete,
two quick things that would lift that shield's appearance, and mean that people have to look hard to see the flaws.
Neatly cover the hose in black duck tape. Not perfect, but it will look better. (re-tape when neccessary)
Paint some simple design on it. A plain black shield always looks to my eye as if the owner just can't be arsed.

Re: Pics that would inspire new guys. (UPDATE 8/31/2011)
@Robert: You will see that in my original post I mentioned that I made the shield in a rush the day before the event. I had no time to paint it. But I have since. I am continuing the Goblin Motif from my last loaner shield. I modeled the Nihtgenga here off of the middle attacker on the "home defense" scene from the Franks Casket. Just made them goblins instead ;p
They look like they are stalking each other 'round the boss. Silly goblins.

Varukh told me how he did the leather edge covering on his shield, so I now have a project to work on! ^u^

Nice painting. I'm sorry I wasn't clear, but my previous post was pointing out that complaining about rubber hose when every weapon in the whole darn thread is covered in gaffa tape is a little bit odd to me. Furthermore, "cover it in leather" is not always the best way to do something. I'd save your time, use that shield as is for now, and make another, as accurate as possible instead of going all hollywood and covering everything in acid tan leather.
I will be sure to add an emoticon in future.
Carry on.

IMHO we should all strive for accuracy but at the same time this is anachronism so a little lenience should be given on all accounts. I mean if we aren't having fun we are doing it wrong.
. So joke, poke a little fun, and enjoy it for what it is.

I think that portion of the An tir ceremonies is disturbing and appears extremely disrespectful to the crown. I would never take part in it even if I moved there but this just goes to show the vast differences in Kingdom cultures. I shudder every time I see pics of that particular bit.

I suppose it's emblematic of the "King as servant to the people" concept, but it DOES strike me oddly. IMHO it would be more appropriate to hold one's weapon in such a way as to offer the hilt to the one to whom one is swearing fealty than to appear to threaten him with it.

I am not a new guy and I am asking the same thing. Also wondered if it was an SCA photo because I thought steel weapons were and absolute no no at SCA events.
(as one can tell I am no longer active and hardly was then)

JvR wrote:I thought steel weapons were and absolute no no at SCA events.
That custom sems to have varied by kingdom. Especially in the earlier days (single-digit AS years), it was fairly common for members to sport "dress steel" in some areas. I know it was common in the East and Atlantia. I also recall that there were events in the West where dress weapons were not permitted.
At events where steel was allowed, it was often the custom to disarm before entering the "Royal Presence" at Court, usually about ten feet. This would occasionally take some time, as there were those who truly thought more was better. Some Royals waived this custom, saying that they had no cause to fear their own subjects; and others would waive it for certain favoured people. Knights were usually welcome in the Royal Presence under arms.
It was also the custom to equip one's scabbard with a "peace strap," some sort of device that made it impossible to draw a blade quickly or for it to slip out accidentally.
On one occasion, when I was called into Court, I had no blades upon me but I stopped before mounting the dais and removed a pen from my pouch, saying sotto voce, "The pen is mightier," to the amusement of those around me.

A knight I know once told me "as a Knight it is my job to counsel my king. If that means dragging him out back to the woodshed for a good beating, then that is my job."
I see this jesture as a variation on that theme.

I think that the caption may be wrong. I don't see that it can be the knights swearing fealty, as Duke Havordh is patently not from An Tir. Could it have been the HRM Ieuan was actually getting knighted himself? That would make more sense. I have seen other knighting ceremonies where the knights hold the points of their blades to the candidate as he/she makes his/her oath of fealty.

And it also, so far as I know, requires a King. The only instance I recall of a reigning King being knighted was the late Gyrth Oldcastle, who was knighted at the Pennsic War by the other Kings there assembled - at the time, there were only three of four. They told him to swear fealty by taking off his crown and speaking the oath to it, then they all held the sword (which I think was the Eastern Sword of State) and delivered the accolade.

HERALD: As a knight swears fealty to the Crown when the honor is received, so is that fealty is renewed at the beginning of each reign. Therefore let all Knights of the Realm come forth, with their swords girded on, to kneel before the Throne, together with those Masters-at-Arms who wish to swear fealty.
And when they have gathered:
HERALD: Do each of you, a Knight or Master at Arms of this Realm, now swear fealty to _______________ and _______________, your undoubted King and Queen, that you will obey their lawful commands in all matters that concern this realm? And do you now swear faith to the Crown of An Tir? And being mindful that the honor of the Realm and of the Order of which you are members springs from your own deeds, do you swear that you will treat chivalrously and courteously with those of every degree as long as Their Majesties remain Sovereigns of An Tir?
MEMBERS OF CHIVALRY: I so swear.
KING: And We, for Our part, do swear fealty to you, the members of the chivalry of An Tir. We promise to protect and defend you, and those of your households, with all Our power, so long as We remain Sovereigns of An Tir. So say We, _______________, King of An Tir.

Regarding no steel at events:
Steel on the hip is common at Midrealm events. I know a number of folks who carry functional swords. There is a 10' rule for steel in the Royal Presence, but the Chivalry are exempted from it.

In Atenveldt the knights swear unto the crown this oath...
This day do I render homage and fealty to my sovereign Lord the Crown of Atenveldt, who will from this day onward be my liege lord. I will remain in all ways His true servant, serving Him faithfully, and endeavoring ever to prove myself worthy of this noble title of Knight. This I do swear by my sword, belt and chain.
So say I ______________.
