These are sapogi (sp) Russian boots, and the shaft of the boot is actually canvas, and not leather. No where worth the 100+ dollars.

I do not see anything on the page that suggest that it is canvas instead of leather. Where did you get that info.

They look like the leather ones on Sportsman Guide to me.
One must have small calfs as the tops are rather tight.

I gave Sportsman's Guide about $15 for a pair. I threw them out because the calves were too narrow and the rubber soles would make my feet sweat.

If you look around the original site mentioned there are all leather boots, but I have no knowledge as to quality. All of the old communist era boots I have seen require you to have less calf than I am cursed with.

Chello!

with sapogi it depends...the enlisted boots have rubber-impregnated canas or ersatz leather for the uppers. The officer boots are all leather. In WW2 pics, the ones with shiny boots are officers...or amybe NKVD troops! ;)

Now, looking at the ebay pics, those are the enlisted. The pebbled surface is a dead giveaway! :)

Yeah, the narrow calves can be a pain. Eventually, after seeing how Duke Gregor in the East handled his boots, I kept mine. With good insole inserts (which I was going to use anyway) and tossing in a gusset in the back seam, they worked fine for the kind of slogging through the dirt I needed 'em for. Plus, for that price I could get 2 pairs and still be paying a third of what other boots might have run me. *shrug*

Why try to make a 20th century boot into something that did not exist in the middle ages? For the cost of these boots, and a little more you can actually own something that existed? Biker boots, and Commie dice shakers are one of the bad marks on the SCA. You might as well be wearing Reeboks!

I would rather see these dice shakers covered over than laced combat boots or tennis shoes...wouldn't you. Turnshoes are great..that is what I fight in but, for some people that require better ankle support or insole support this is a better option.

If you think jackboots give ankle support then you are seriously fooling yourself.

Don't get me wrong here, I am not attacking you. As long as excuses are made for people to continue to use items that are no where near correct, then people will continue to use subpar items. There are too many excellent vendors out there now selling "turnshoes" in the same price range as the Commie surplus.

Honest question here... Ankle support foot support isn't period right, injuries were expected yes? because people were trying to kill each other and a twisted ankle was nothing right?

How do you deal with the boss on Monday when you hobble into work and he is expecting you to be able to walk around?

I'm looking to put a kit together so these are considerations I have.

I think his point was for people who are buying these because "Sir Soandso has them" even if they do not have Sir Soandso's ankle problem. Fighting boots that are military surplus/motorcycle etc. are a huge eyesore in the SCA. The only time I am wearing mine is in melees (usually because I am a front shieldman), and it isnt for the ankle support, but the steel toes. Otherwise I am wearing turnshoes. If you are simply referring to twisting your ankle when fighting, if so, then something is probably wrong with your fighting style. That seems to be a pretty rare injury.

If you do have an existing problem, look around for different alternatives that are not quite as bulky. Frequently ankle support do not require 1" soles.

I agree with Primus. You can get good looking boots or turnshoes for right around a hundred bux from several different folks. Lady Oren, Revival (both the old style and the new), even HE has some good looking shoes for right around a hunnert. I'd rather go that direction.

From one who tore 50% of the ligements in my right ankle at work years ago...I HAVE to have ankle support when I fight... My ankle brace fits in my turnshoes and other than I look like I have fat ankles...I look way more period than using any kind of modern footwear...Covered or no...I practice in my boots only to keep from wearing out my turnshoes. So saying this is a good excuse for ankle support is BS...

Turnshoes (or whatever is appropriate for your kit) are indeed good and at last decently available. Cheap boots, which are usable for more than just SCA stuff and able to be had for 4+ pairs for the price of a turnshoe, are also useful. I have both and use whichever I find appropriate.

Looked at another way, you could just happy we're not all wearing Lucan-green flip-flops ;-)
