tvetree,
It depends on what you want as to cost. Evey one of my hilts are a little diffrent. Just part of the prosess. But E mail me for more info on a matched set. I am trying to keep the price as low as I can but that will be determend from one project to the next.
One way I want to do this is and keep the price down is just make them and see who gets it first..:-)
Drop me a note at hesseniron at gmail.com and I will put you on the after the war list....
Thanks!

I would love one if the size and weight are right!

They are beautiful! But what are they made of? They look a bit heavy.

VERY interested. My schiavona has 3 cracked bars at the moment and no one seems to make any baskets that are even close to aesteticly pleasing for heavy weapons. All the pretty stuff is for fencers and us heavies are left with bid-cages or turd on a stick plastic. It's so bad I'm building a persona around what I can comfortably fight with in gauntlets.

I love them...but At what I would estimate at 90- 125 bucks a shot, they would be less than cost friendly. But they ARE gorgeous.

If I sent you blue-prints or pictures of a custom piece, would you be interested in trying it or is all of your work artistic and self inspired?

I am strictly a solid basket type of guy. I might make an exception for one of those though. The price would really be the deciding factor.

Hello all..........
Well with these hilts you get a trade off of look vs. weight but not as much as it would look like. Let me get these to the scale in the next day or two and i will let you know how much they weigh. What puts it on is the large leaves i use for looks. If I go with all bar stock it drops a few oz. I like doing any of the above. As for the cost I am shooting for $60 mid line. Less if simple, more for real custom items, as you would expect.
I also hated the look of the slaped on bars with no good shape hilts. But cant compeat with the low price of them. So I have to stick with the price I have. Atached is another photo of a hilt i made 2-3 years ago....not the best shot....

So keep posting questions here so I can put the info for every on here. E mail me if you want to talk about getting one.........
Thanks for the feed back every one. This will help me make them better!

What is the diameter of the ring at the top of the basket that the handle goes through? I would be concerned that shaving it too much then sticking a nail through it, or sticking a nail through it at all, would weaken the rattan significantly.

Dagonet,
I have two way of doing them (that I will sale) and both are strong mounts. 1 1/4" with a screw to tighten and another that clamps that can be made larger. I hate plumber clamps......breaking hate full things.....
I will post a photo of my hilt later today that has gone through several sticks and is 3 years or more old...........

I'm not in a huge rush on the boss. I'll get it drawn up and get it to you after war. I'm camping with Ysgie but will definitely see you around. I've obviously seen several of your hilts around, but the new batch of hilts and baskets is really raising the bar.

Nice teaser shots! :) The basket I presently use was based on that type of sword but I only had a picture of one side so the thumb side and knuckle side look the same. :( Oh well it has held up and lasted me 9 years now. I'm not a big fan of the internal bar. I found it interfered with my half-gauntlet. The SCA is more about swinging and less about poking and that leads to a sword grip more like a hammer and less like a pistol.

I may have to reactivate an old project. I was trying to sketch up a design that could be laser cut from plate stock, bent or dished to shape and then welded together. My plan was to use 3/16" stock and maybe heat-treat it. I think 14ga would be too weak given the amount of material that has to be removed.

How do you like to attach the rattan? (I also dislike hose clamps) I may beable to sketch something up.

To everyone,
I am back from Estralia war and had a great time! It was good meeting a few folks from the AA. Those that got hilts from me please post feed back here (good, bad, Ugly) so all can see and I can address any problems that may come up.
I also look for any ideas you folks out here have. I might not use them all but it helps me to refine the product for you out there.
So some points brought up to me at the war:
Use spell check…….LOL  will do!
Two sizes for center sockets ……..I will offer them in 1 ¼ and 1 ½ inner diameter for you that like larger sticks.
A slight oval on the center socket to help prevent spinning of the hilt on the stick……I will address this on the larger cross hilts with 3 ways to help with this, a slight oval, small tab to tape over, room on top of socket to press with a vice……This last has worked for the last 8 years or so but I like the other ideas as well.
The Katz hilt is Ok with the Atenvedlt Kingdom Marshal as a one handed weapon hilt as the gantlet is a main factor to prevent entry in to a legal helm grill.
I Will have pay pal set up by next week and I hope to start getting hilts and baskets out to you that contacted me at hesseniron@gmail.com in about two weeks.
Order soon if you want these as with the volume of orders I have received I need to crunch the numbers for pricing on production of these items. I will not change any price on these until Gulf Wars….and I might not if the numbers work out for me. Just a heads up for you all. The simple items should not change much but the baskets and more complex hilts are the ones that really eat my time.
Thanks every one!

Stefhan you rock.
They fit just right for me. Good looks good protection and over all sweet. The one you made me three years ago is still holding up good as ever. Keep up the good work. I'll talk to you later about a Katz for a secondary.

3rd Basket

Post by Domingo »

Hey Stefhan,
Do you still have that last basket you showed me or did you sell it? If not I might have a buyer. Could you post a pic of it?
I think the three I have from you are enough for me for now.
