period dyes? red henna?

period dyes? red henna?
just found some red henna,what can you do with it? There is a local middle eastern restaurant that also sells groceries,hooka & such, so I was browsing the grocery side and noticed they had "pure red henna" in 200 gm/7 oz boxes I seem to remember this being used as a dye stuff in period, but wondered if anyone has experimented. plus they want $2.25 for a box, so not too steep.
