The Peel Affinity

Greetings all,

I was able to get a copy of "The Peel Affinity" at Estrella from Gaukler's. It is a very good book, full of pictures and text. Really impressive, and on the long drive back home, I kept finding very interesting tidbits that help fill in some gaps.

If you're interested in the 14th Century, this is a must have. It's available from Windrose, as well as Gaukler's. Johannes from Windrose had shown me some pictures from the book in October, so I was eagerly awaiting it's release. In my opinion, it was well worth the wait!

I picked up a copy from Windrose at the war, and spent the last few days reading it. All in all, well worth it! The text is great, going into a lot of little details, and it has an AMAZING bibliography!

The only issue I had with the book is the photoshopping on some of the photos is a bit off, but it doesn't detract from the overall value of the book.

Pick up a copy now!

Well from what I remember, Bob Charette had a library at least 35 feet long, in bookshelves reaching to the ceiling. He is also a writer I believe, so Im sure he has some connections or advanced insight into accessing texts. And I will say, this...Bob was one of the nicest fellas in terms of helping you out with research. Thats the best kind of historian in my opinion.

Eh, the Medieval Soldier has some wonky photoshopped pics too.

I just got done with the book yesterday and it really was worth the price, but more for ideas than anything else. I've got a direction to take my persona and this just helped refine that direction a little more.

Aaron do what I do; sell a few items to pay for books. I am waiting for mine to show; I want to see if Kim and I made the final cut as we were at one of the photo shoots a few years ago.

This looks like a very useful book, and I may have to pick up a copy once I have a chance to read again (grad school gets in the way of that). I would really like to find something like this that focusses about 40 years earlier, though.

No that is Master Galleron; at that angle I could see why you think it is me. Kim and I were only in images for the faire photo shoot and I had a salmon collored tunic on. I was the bar tender in a pud.

Got my copy yesterday (Mon. 3/10) and the first word that comes to mind after gleaning the book is: Wow!

Outstanding work. The book is a larger format than I expected, closer to 8x10... I was expecting the smaller format like the Chivalry Bookshelf titles. The quality of the book is outstanding, with a heavy weight clay-coat paper with a nice high gloss, a strong binding, and even a page marker (nice touch IMO). The book is SO nice that I was a bit disappointed that my copy came with that typical "lower front corner crush" that always seems to happen to hardcover books during shipment.

Lots and lots of excellent photos, and a surprising (to me at least) amount of text. Many of the sites used for staging the photos were amazing and really made the difference by adding a great deal to the reality of the images. It must've been a lot of fun to scout those and then coordinate travel for the whole crew

There is a little bit of photoshopping evident, but frankly I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was used very sparingly as I would have expected a whole lot more. Most of the shots are just a combination of great tableau portrayal and great photography. I think the Company did a nice job avoiding the temptation to rely on photoshop and it is apparent that they made a great effort to keep the majority of the shots very clean and realistic.

I haven't really drilled into the text yet as I was just too blown away by the photos, so I can't pick any nits just yet. But at first blush it looks to be a very granular look into daily life (across multiple class lines) with just a brief bit of "world view" information.

Overall, a truly noteworthy effort and well worth every penny. I count this book as a "must have" for the 14th Century Mafiosi. This is a damn fine book.

I got mine yesterday too and I agree 100% with Michael about the book. I have always liked The Medieval Soldier: 15th Century Campaign Life Recreated in Colour Photographs by Gerry Embleton but the Peel Affinity is even better. There are a few bad photoshoped images in there but with hundreds of photos who cares it one or two are a little off.

They did a great job with the bibliography too for those researching the era.

Glen K is in some of the horse photos, Jeff J, Kim (my wife), and I are in the pictures of the medieval faire; I am the bar tender. It is Jeff J in the 1450 suit of armor in the back also.

I've seen Bob's Mac harness in person too. I had to actually touch it to make sure it was real because the satin finish was so uniform! I think I originally thought it was fiberglass or plastic. He has a cerveiller and great helm by Mac also. Do you happen to have pics of these?

I haven't talked to him in 15 years. Do you know if he is still writing? The first three Shadowrun novels that he wrote are still some of my favorites.

Sigurd used to be a part of La Belle Compagne back in the day.

Well, Im sure Bob had a hand in the book right...I mean, its effectively his group.

During my brief stint with the group I saw the harness many times.....and the mac cerveiller and great helm. (I had forgotten about those pieces).I was briefly involved when I was about 20....but too young, had no money, and in the midst of college and chasing women.

Id love to do some type of archer or armoured persona...Its hard as hell to contact them. I dont know if they check their website emails.

Oh yeah Sigurd...yeah Doug is a old friend since the early 90s....I used to go over to his shop to use the welder before I bought mine....and we shared a lot of shop techniques ....talked a lot of armour talk (which by consequence means I can truly say I picked up a tip or two from the Valerious school). Bought a bunch of his LMS stuff too. He came by the shop here about a year ago.
