First project of '08 finished

Not exactly historically accurate and probably not SCA combat legal, but here it is...

Thanks

No, it's all aluminum. I'm gonna let in grey naturally. Which will go better with my plans.

Reminds me of the mad hatter in Alice in Wonderland. If it's aluminum I'd pull off the large square, send it out to be hard-coat anodized and replace the square with a brass buckle. That would be really cool. :)

But I gotta ask... Why?

Why? It is the beginning of a larger group

and

the Mad Hatter IS part of the equation.

I saw this today and it looks even better in person. Nice job!! I like that you made the brim from one piece. It is hard to tell from the photo, but there are two contrasting finishes. My only critique: make the polished finish more polished and/or the the dull finish more dull. Being of the same material, the contrast is difficult to see unless in extremes.

"With my plans", eh? Sounds like theres more to come.

Slash is going to be fighting in the SCA?

That is pretty cool. I could see owning that as a conversation piece/costume item.

I do need to work the finish a little more. Got some scratches and and spots to work out. The idea is to polish the band more.

As to "more to come", that is correct.

I had thought about making/leaving a way to insert/interchange various accessories - feather(s), Ace of Spades, 10/6 price tag, etc.
Ultimately I decided not to hold up the project. Its in the notes so maybe next time?

I have a guy in my park that would kill for that hat. He always wears a top hat. So a metal one would really go over well.

Didn't think about Slash, that's good though. I do think the hat has a better chance of passing safety inspection than the big hair in the eyes...

I did make this as an art piece/costume piece. The rest of the project will follow similar lines. It is wearable and has removable padding inside.

The guy who executed Charles 1st had a wide brimmed hat made of bands of steel with a leather outer so that it looked like a normal hat so you're not 100% inaccurate!

Nice work BTW!

Glue a magnet to the inside, then you could do magnetic feather, ace of spades, etc. The hat is nine kinds of cool.

LOL!

I'd love to see the size of the Monopoly board that hat goes with.

Scary! My wife and I were discussing using magnets in that fashion for something completely unrelated last night and I began think...hmmm...
and was trying to figure out how to mount the inside magnet while at work today. So...
Great idea! That way I could make various accessories and they could be swapped.
Thank you!

Again (like Slash) hadn't thought about that. But you're right! Maybe I'll build the shoe next.

Thanks, I think I'll change my name to the Rock. 'Cuz apparently that's what's in my head. I looked at the link. Skipped right past the page you linked to and started checking out the company info and their hats. Trying to figure out if you meant 'make the case' for them to sell it/them or 'make the case' for making a metal hat in the first place, or what?
It just now dawned on me, you were saying make the CASE to keep it in!
Which now that I look at your post and the link is glaringly obvious, so before I make the case I think I'll go make myself a metal DUNCE cap.
Now that I actually grew a brain cell, Thanks again, and can't wait to see the steampunk stuff.

I was wondering if that's what you were going to think when I wrote it. But I said to myself -"naw, he'll know what I mean"
