Saturday Knight Fights, Round 1 - Now with pictures!

Post by Rhyos »

As some have seen me mention around here, I'm not an SCA fighter, but a member of an independent knightly organization known as the Knightly Order of the Fiat Lux. We're a charity organization that raises money for special needs kids by doing what we do best: busting chops and busting skulls! This Saturday, May 3rd, we are putting on the first in what will become a monthly padded and live steel tournament series we're calling Saturday Knight Fights! Food, fighting, and perhaps some new friends is the order of the evening! A $10 donation is all we ask for! Pick-up fights are available and encouraged when waiting on tournament fights. Food and drink will be provided, but alcohol is BYOB.

On a safety note, with mixed disciplines such as this, we do ask that everyone who intends on fighting sign a liability waiver and bring "appropriate sports protection". No cup, no fight. Head protection can be provided, but will be communal, so if you've got a helm feel free to bring it!

As this is our first run, the steel tournament will only consist of members of the Fiat Lux, but if you're interested in fighting steel, please bring your equipment! We'll be doing safety checks and pre-registration for Round 2 in June!

Directions: 77 north to exit 16B in Charlotte . Turn right off the exit, then a right on Beatties Ford Road (look for the two pharmacies). Go a few miles till you see a couple of ranches, then immediately look for McClure Road . Turn right (an old white garage is on the corner). We’re at 4550 McClure Road , 28216.

This event is open to the general public, but I figured that I would extend a special invitation to members of the Armour Archive, as I'm sure some would love to test their mettle and metal against others. Bring your game, bring your gear, and leave the grudges in the field!

Please either post here in the thread or send me a PM/e-mail with any questions, comments, or RSVPs! (If you plan on stopping by, please let me know! I need to make sure I get enough food!)

sounds interesting but the Local SCA kingdom is having its Crown tourney that same weekend. Many of them will be travelling there in an effort to become my Heirs or to watch and see who the new Prince and Princess will be... Let us know when other such events are in the area.

We'll be holding this the first Saturday of every month. Thanks for showing interest, and I apologize for the scheduling conflict!

What kind of fighting rules do you use for steel combat?

We generally use a 7-point system (torso = 3, limbs = 1, head = 2), and generally make sure we don't aim for the face. We have a marshal in the field at all times, as well as side-marshals to ensure scoring. Hits must be of sufficient force, and the fight continues until the field marshal calls a hold. The armor and weaponry used needs to be checked out with the Chapter Herald in advance, which is why I mentioned pre-registration for next month's Fights. In case the blade you decide to use doesn't meet the standard, we do have some swords on hand that can be used. We'll have a copy of our Rules of the Lyst on hand. We don't keep things very technical, but we do need to make sure that safety comes first.

Sounds cool, post photos after the event!
Hark the moaning gulls around him,
Hark their shuddering calls of terror
At his fearful fighting pæan.

How about face protection; do you need a helmet with a face cover or grill or do you guys wear open faced helms?

Gladly. Hopefully we'll have a few photographers there. This Round may be a little on the small side, but Round 2 is shaping up to be much bigger. I hope to see some Archivists there!

Edit: Closed-face helms, please. The Steel portion does involve live, though blunted, blades which can easily slip through a face-grate. Sallet + Bevor is fine, but we don't want to see someone lose an eye!

No problem. There are a few hard scheduled events in that area and this weekend just happens to be one of them.

I too would like to see some pictures so I can see how different the fighting and armor requirements are from us. It would be hard to not swing full force like we do with Rattan but I see that being a BAD thing with steel.

Sir Sinclair, you do have an excellent point, which is why we insist on a closed-face or solid-visored helm as well as a complete weapon/armor check before entering the field.

And yes, we do have a site! http://www.knightlyorderofthefiatlux.org
We do have some pictures from previous events posted, and we're working on getting some video up.

Amazing what shows up in 15 minutes!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I finally managed to get pictures of the event! The turnout wasn't as high as I had hoped, but we still had a couple of excellent combatants. Unfortunately, there's a bit of a tease toward the end of the pictures, as both sets of batteries ran out as the steel was starting!

Mods, if this wall of pictures is too much, let me know and I'll post them some other way.

You can just kinda skip over these. :-[

And those were just the pickup fights!

This one was a little fast.

Unfortunately, at this point the second and final set of batteries in the camera died. There were substantially more pictures than this, but to post them all would melt most machines down. Those that were in attendance, and there weren't any crowd shots, thoroughly enjoyed the event, and will most likely be in attendance to the next one on June 7th. We hope you can make out there as well! Show us what you've got!
