fur around the neck?? How historic?

Ill be going with a pre-vikeing persona via 700-800 and i wanted to know if a wolf fur or coyote fur around the neck would hold any historic use or place for this persona. I have a gorget of steel that i was thinking would look cool if i hide the gorget with a fur. I have a coyote fur (probaly not historic) but it is easy to pass off as a fox or small wolf. Or maybe just maybe he brought the fur back with him from the new world . I would be wearing it over maille as a cheiften. Anyone have any input on this?

A maille aventail, or camail, hides the gorget just as well, and doesn't have to be explained at all...
