New pattern SCA Roman "Gallic J" helmet for sale

Post by CLANG »

I've been wanting to re-vamp my SCA Roman helmet for a long time, and finally did. I decided to model it on Robinson's Gallic J because the shape lent itself reasonably well to rattan fighting.

This helmet is mild steel and has a 12 gauge top with the remainder being 14 ga. It's sized for a 23" noggin, give or take a bit. Note that if you have a very thick neck, this particular helmet probably isn't for you, but it should do fine for us mortals. :)

I tried to make it look AS MUCH like the real thing as I reasonably could (with the exception of the damn bar-grill!). I followed Simkins' suggestion that the original J could actually have been of Italic manufacture, and put a twist-on type crest-holder on top instead of a slide-in type. The crest-attachment rings front and back are attached with brass split-pins, so they can be easily removed.

It's beefed up for SCA combat, of course, but I put a lot of work into trying to give a good impression of a Roman hat. The down-side is that it got a bit pricey in the process.

Asking $755, and I'll throw in Priority insured s/h in the US.

Any questions, please ask, and thanks for looking.

And just like that all those Roman guys felt unsatisfied with their hats.

Oh how I would snatch this up if 1. It would accommodate us thick necked folks (18) and if the lady of the house would let me bring home another helmet.

Clang that thing is amazing! Fantastic work! Its absolutely stunning!

Oh my.

I have a tin-dipped Sir Brand Roman sport helm, I would give up in a heart beat for that one!

We need a drool emoticon. And boy am I glad that I am late fifth century Roman so I don't have to try to budget that bad boy in. Amazing work.

Yep, agree with all. This is one of the best SCA-ified representations I have seen in awhile.

Hey, thanks for all the glowing comments, folks. I'm a little overwhelmed.

That said, this helmet has a new owner, who emailed me about 5 minutes after I posted it. :D I hope she'll be happy with it.
