I finally switched to a more Rus-looking kit, and fought in it for the first time at Western Crown last weekend. Martin of Rivenstar was kind enough to take some pictures and digitize them for me...

This is a full SCA-legal kit.. the legs are on their way out (to be replaced by hidden ones), the helm too, but not for a while.

That looks great. My question is: How does the leather scale breast plate move for you? ( I think that's what it's called)
I'm interested in upgrading my armour.

Why are getting rid of the helmet??
Just cover the face with maile and it would be fab.

One minor comment on the lamellar --
what are those two panels on the front?
If I could recommend,
make it all lamellar and have it close under the right armpit (and, if you need, over the right shoulder).

Also, if you must upgrade the helmet, save your money for a custom job, based on an existing piece. But I agree with Norman--you shouldn't have to replace the helmet you've got.

I am replacing the helmet eventually, with a masked Cuman one (Sir Brand and Ugo are helping me do it, so it should come out great!). It works for now, I do plan on covering the grill with maille.

As for the panels -- I ran out of lammelae, had to improvise

It moves great, if I knew how to do summersaults out of armour I could do them in this stuff. In terms of protection -- the rows of lamellar that sit on my kidneys are waxed, the rest are left nice and soft.. I feel torso blows a bit more than in my old brig, but it's still quite protective. I do plan on sneaking in a metal plate over my chest for the upcoming war -- fiberglass pikes might send me to neverland otherwise, I am afraid..

Is the skirt of the mail split anywhere? Any idea how the "tailoring" of the hauberk compare to other mass produced maille? (yours is the stuff from Russia, right?)

The skirt is not split -- but that's fairly easy to do yourself, and they can do it if you as them. The tailoring is excellent -- I haven't used other mass produced maille, but the fit of this shirt is perfect, made exactly to measure, except for a bit of extra on the legs and arms -- they wanted to make sure I have enough in case I measured myself short (cutting away is a lot easier that adding on -- the maille is welded).

Brian Price looked at the shirt a while ago and said the worksmanship is excellent; he, and several others, have also remarked that the rings are tighter and neater than the Indian rivetted stuff.

I'm very curious. What did you pay for the hauberk? It really looks good. Please, post picks when you drape the grill. I have seen is a couple times, but only on helms with oculars.

If these hauberks were to be sold in the US, they would cost no less than $700 -- final price depends on the shipping from Russia.

Oh, btw, the rings are flat, alternating rows of welded and solid.

On the helm you should try to make the grill flush with the hem instead of stuck to the out side then with chainmaille over it it would not even show, that the mine is. I don't know why armourers make these nice helms the stick ugly bar grills to the out side intead of mounting them closer to the inside compare White mountain's helms with Ice Falcons to really see the difference. BTW Ice Falcon make some nice helms just wish he wouldn't slap the ugly bar grill on the outside of them like he does.

Dmitriy, if you want some waxed lamellae for shoulder protection let me know. Like I said at practice, I've got enough extra for both of us. Also, the fact that your double holes on the top of the lamellae run veritcal and mine run horizontal shouldn't make a big difference, we could probably eliminate that center band of leather too. But, soon both of us will have SS birka plates to play with

To answer for Dmitriy, no both he and I have no shoulder protection other than gambeson and maille. Having the maille without the cavalry split has its advantages too, like with those pikemen who cant seem to distinguish between my cup and my chest
