New Helm - Shamrock Armoury
Well to say Jackie's customer service is amazing would be an understatement. Tons of contact, even half way pictures.
I bought a helm from Jackie which he thought wouldn't fit, even told me so, he thought it would be too big but I wanted it, so he said if it didn't fit properly we'd work out a custom one.
Needless to say, the guy who actually made the helmet was right, and it didn't fit.
I've thrown some leatherwork into the pot to add some more to a custom helmet, he sent mid point pictures and then today finally got some finished pictures.

I'd also be interested on what people think a plausible time and place would be.
And for your hardcore folks, even if you went "Well, the top is blah and the occulars are blah.. that horse tail.. blah."
Feel free to disect it if you wish, I won't cry. Just curious.

But seriously, really nice helm.
Could say that about numerous helms if you put a horse tail on it I guess. heh.

I don't know of any "occularia" helms outside of Vendel culture based in Sweden 6-8th century or thereabouts. (Off the top of my head, check some references before taking this too seriously.) Vendel culture had lots of contact with contemporary Franks and Saxons. Also Angles, Jutes and other germanic invaders in Britain. So this helm might be suitable for any of these people or their battlefield opponents. So for a time and place I'd go with 6-8th century northern Europe.

Konstantin the Red wrote:The brass rivets about the bottom edge of the oculars: are they holding some framework into which the bargrill welds? Very elegant bargrill as these things go!
The bars are welded in place and the brass rivets are just for desecration,
To me it is hard to make a bargrill look somewhat good in a Viking style helm. The only thing I try to do with the bars is go with the flow of the helm and make it appealing to the eyes.
Thanks
Jackie
I wouldn't wear it with any kit later than the 6th or 7th century. The occular and the strips style aventail are very Vendal (as has already been mentioned Lol) but it's the main part of the helm that really talks to me. 20 odd helmets with the bowl made like that have been found all over the place (including sweden, germany and france I believe). I'm sure they're all Ostrogothic. I read somewhere they probably all came from the same city in Italy and are almost definately 6th century in origin. This era really isn't my norm but I can't think of any helmets that combine occular and cheekguards though the ostrogothic ones all had cheekguards (of a slightly different design though), the horse tail seems a touch fanciful but if anyone knows of any example's that prove me wrong I'm always happy to eat my own words (they taste great with ketchup
).
That's just what I can see at a glance, a very plain Ostrogothic helm (the originals were heavily decorated), with Vendal occular and aventail, but it looks like a very well made helmet and I hope you get a great deal of enjoyment from it whatever it's mixed historical origins.

This style of top with the upside down "T" shaped bands is referred to as a "Baldenheim" helm as thats where one was found (north eastern france)
Also referred to as Ostrogothic as its thought that where many were produced (Italy)
They are fairly widespread in regards to where they have been found.
Jackies looks like a combo of vendal/valsgarde elements combined with a "Baldenhiem" style.
Nice looking hat

Well done.
For a perspective that you might not have had cross you mind...
I am badly color blind. To me, with the decorative bit on the petals in the back, it looked like the slats were leather I thought that they were leather for a little bit, until I figured out what was going on.
I saw one thing, and it was lovely, and then I realized that I wasn't looking at what I thought I was. That was a really neat aesthetic moment for me, but I guess you have to be really color blind to see it.
It looks beautiful.

Good thing I wasn't drinking coffee when I read this. Might've passed an entire packet of Splenda through my schnozz.
Hey... the bargrill makes the face of the helm a toothy smilie... Shamrock's Happy Spangenhat Shoppe.

Well, the bar grill is WONDERFUL in the way that it flows with the piece and doesn't detract from the overall impression.
Don't get me wrong, I think the rest of the hat is sexy too, I'm just saying you did an AWESOME job of making the bar grill NOT interfere with the sexiness, as is so often the case when you have to put a grill on something that didn't have one in period.
Great job!!!!!

I think the guys nailed the time and location also.
Agreed the bar grills are not my favorite thing to do either.
How about a face some time.
Or the cut out 10ga. style we have seen here before?
Thanks for the pics.
Hal
I have a start on a face, I just need more free time to work on it.
Maybe one day
