Looking for SCA pics of viking fighters!

Post by hjalmr »

Greetings.

I am once again attempting to get off my butt and get back into the action and I am wanting to go back to a basic viking fighting kit (have been a mix mash of stuff over the last feqw years). I would like to get some ideas by what others are wearing so I can begin the process. As I may bow out again, I am holding off on buying chainmaille and just looking for the common viking look. I have already scanned the internet (including a hand full of SCA group sites) and have scoured the AA -but the look eludes me. Can you help??

Any pic is cool, but I am really looking for the "on the field about to fight look". Thanks.

Take a look at John the Tall's ('bigjon' on the AA) armour. He has a wonderful kit that is a fine example of a viking kit without the chain. He has the art of hidden armour down to a science. You can see some examples here on this thread:

http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=90164

Chat with him. If he can't help you let me know and i will do what I can.

Thanks Greenshield -you actually have one of the kits I like alot chainmail and all. John the Tall's rig will be gladiatorial soon as I am making him a gladitorial helmet. His kit is kinda what I'm going for so thanks.

Anyone else??

Hjlmr has another good kit but Hjlmr, get those legs wrapped ; )

Pull the chain off, throw on a padded under shirt and you're good to go. I'll see what other pics I can throw your way.

Hjalmr,
If you need some pics of my hidden armour, just let me know.

Some of the keys to doing a nice Norse or Viking age kit is to have protective armour that is hidden but remain within the rules and safety of the SCA combat rule set.

Proper tunic, pants, legwraps, shoes and belt can go a long ways.
Then of course a spiffy helm seals the deal!

Also while doing a fighting kit like this you have to make concessions to adhear to the SCA, such as half gaunts and basket hilted swords, sure you can go with finger gaunts but they are costly and still look like finger gaunts.
I've made a set of very low profile half gaunts, that have the leather parts backed by padding and then sewn to the leather gloves.

Just shoot me an email and I'll help any way possible!

Also, looking forward to the helm!!!

Thanks bigjon.
I can do the hidden armour thing as I've been doing that my whole sca career. Nothing like having the marshals run out on the field screaming HOOOOLLLDDD! because they think your not armored. Lol.. I even had a marshal do that once 5 minutes after inspecting me. Lol..

Anyway, I'm just looking around at viking kits for ideas -mostly involving the clothes and overall look. So far I have gotten a few good ideas and I think I have a finalized draft...

Cool. This is pretty much what I'm going for. Same stripped pants and shirt/tabbard. Very nice indeed -I hope I look 1/2 as good.

Just put a pic of mine in another thread ... had the bauz on for the Pennsic melee but fight with alum/leather forearm slints under the linen sleeves. Would also add leather drap over the helm slats.

This was linen overtunic for Pennsic instead of the sturdy/lighter wool overtunic I normal fought with (which would go over the brig. SCA gorget). Legs are HE wool with wool wraps (do a great job same as athletic tape for ankle support if done right).

I'm wealthy! I have a helm AND a sword!!!

Really? I would think since he registered the name he wouldn't mind it. I was his squire for years and I thought I might have heard something about this...

Anyway, that is a cool shot.

Yeah, come to think of it, that's how he introduces himself in In Service to the Dream.

Denewulf has a nice looking kit, which he has posted on another thread.

Syr Gunnar has as top notch kit, as does HRH EikBrandr (Syr Theo here).

Maybe they'll chime in

Ack, OK, Hrolfr. ;) I'm working on my kit a bit at the moment and planned on waiting to post to this thread until I had the touch ups done, but I 'spose I can post the pic you're referencing. I'll just have to put up a pic of the new kit when it's ready. :p

Technically, the helm's wrong for my period (but it's so pretty), the chain is butted and needs to be riveted (and hardly gets worn cuz I'm a wuss and it's too heavy) and the shield in that pic is my 'cheater' shield - aluminum. I have a wood and rawhide shield that needs more action.

Thanks for the compliment.
