Mid-Winter Fest/School of Viking Culture and Skills
The Longship Company, Ltd, a non-profit educational organization, will be holding a public "School for Vikings" on Saturday, February 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the All Saints Church Parish Hall on Oakley Road in Avenue, Maryland.
The event will feature a number of activities for people interested in the Viking age including a Viking encampment, battle reenactment training, a working replica of a Viking age ship's boat, beginners mail making, saga readings and story telling, marlinespike seamanship, and talks about various facets of the Viking age including navigation, women's work, and arts and crafts.
There will also be a continuously running "Viking Film Festival" during the day and that evening during a "members only" pot-luck Viking feast. ("Members only" would, of course, is elastic and includes Marklanders, Scadians, and any other regular medievalists in the area; just not the general public- unless they join! ) Hall fee is $10.00, but might be discounted if we know enough folks are coming (the cost of the hall is $75).
Children with an interest in the Viking age are encouraged to attend, but MUST be accompanied by a responsible adults. This is an educational public event.
The Longship Company will also be engaged in a number of tasks devoted to the maintenance of their vessels which includes the 40 foot, 12 oared Sae Hrafn (Sea Raven); and the 20 foot, four oared Gyrfalcon (Spear Falcon). The School for Vikings marks the beginning of spring maintenance for the vessels, which will be in active service in the later spring and early summer.
If you plan to be in the Mid-Atlantic area this weekend, and if you have any questions, please feel free to post here, or contact me directly.
