Photos of covered armour

Post by Jestyr »

In light of the recent "Exposed plastic-what can we do about it?" thread, I am inspired to write an article (or series of articles) to help people look better on the field.

So what I am looking for are examples of armour where a lot of it is covered. It can be where the actual armour is covered, or with garb (tunic, jupon, etc.). I would rather photos of SCA kits, but good quality images of historical images would be okay. Supportive evidence may or may not be helpful.

Different periods would be great. Multiple photos of the same kit would be helpful. I guess I want something where any fighter could get ideas of how to look better on the field. A quick-start guide to looking good.

Please don't flame me because giving people a a reason to be lazy and not properly research a persona, etc. I am trying to help people with a quick and dirty way of drastically improving their appearance.

By submitting your photo(s) here, you are giving me permission to publish it, yada yada yada.

The one on the left has his plastic covered. Sorry but it's the best picture I have of someone in a plastic breastplate where it doesn't look like he's wearing a plastic breastplate.

Thanks, all. Keep them coming.

Remember, the actual armour doesn't need to be plastic, just covered. I mean, a steel breastplate that is covered accomplishes the same goal.

Is that an article you wrote? Do you have any other photos of your in your kit? Perferably like the grey tunic/surcoat where you had pants and winengas on?

Do you have a higher resolution image where you focus on just you, not fighting?

I'm wearing white plastic elbow and knee cops in this picture, along with splinted aluminum cuises. I'm on the left.

You can just see the outline of my new HDPE "tummy tamer"(thanks honey) armour that I made for Estrella.

If I can hide heat formed plastic against my big chubby body, Id think anyone can.

The unit I fight with potrays a Landsknecht fahlein and have been making a push to present a more historical look in our camp and in the field. The great thing about playing a landsknecht is that you get the benefit of puffy sleeves and plunderhosen to hide your armor, much of what our guys fight in being cobbled togther pieces from leather, plastic and aluminum. So, here's a few pictures of hidden armor from this last Estrella and a war practice beforehand.

http://kokotech.net/bty/Estrella%20XXv% ... _0106.html

Notice that you can't see the body bracelet or the elbows. Too bad you can't see the legs, but no armor is visible their either.

http://kokotech.net/bty/Estrella%20XXv% ... _0126.html

On the right is one of our Soldiers. The outfit is simple and designed to replicate the basic look of slash and puff, but other than helmet, gauntlets and mundane boots, everything is completely hidden. As I recall, he has plastic leg and body bracelet.

http://kokotech.net/bty/Estrella%20XXv% ... _0201.html

Sir Malaius in the blue and yellow woffenrock. Helmet and gauntlets visible, but beyond that, the rest of his armor is completely covered and I recall much of what he was wearing being plastic and leather.

http://kokotech.net/bty/BTY/album/slides/26.html

This is me on the right in the green Woffenrock. My legs have palstic cuisses but they are not only hidden by the skirt, but by a complete pair of slash and puff hosen (and big poofy codpiece you can't see). Vambraces are plastic and my body bracelet is thick ABS riveted to leather and then sandwiched between cotton cloth. I had blackened steel gauntlets, but they disappeared from the field several wars back and I'm saving up for a pair of finger gauntlets. It pains me to wear hockey gloves, but I keep telling myself it's only temprorary.

http://kokotech.net/bty/BTY/album/slides/34.html

Back view of one of our Dopples, Stefan. Other than gauntlets and helmet, you'd never know he had armor on. Wish we had a good front view of him to show.

All in all, our look is getting better and by next Estrella you'll probably be lucky to see any exposed armor on any of our guys. The biggest reason that his is working too, is that our older fighters who've been around a long time are spending the time to help and mentor the newer fighters. Frequent 'sewing nights' and 'armor nights' not only help everyone improve their look and hide the hideous plastic armor, but it also builds camaraderie.

Perfect stuff, Insane Irish and lochinvar76.

lochinvar76, other, full body (less interesting photos) would be very appreciated if you can arrange it. In the mean time, can you get permission for me to use those photos? I don't want to use them without permission.

Here is a close up pic of my current rig. Please ignore the stupid expression and stance. I was trying to look "cool". didn't work.

Gauntlets: Sir Andy Ward mondo style gauntlets

The rock was made by my lovely wife. The yellow shirt was a blowsy "poet's shirt" I picked up at a rennfair. The "hose" are literally a pair of thin navy sweatpants and are 1 size to small for me. I put the legs on then put the pants on over them. Ignore the combat boots, I am working spats for them.

These photos were taken by my father, and while he told me to do what I will with them, I'll run it by him tonight and let you know. Honestly, I'm sure it won't be a problem.

As for full body photos, I don't have those but with some time I am sure I could arrange for a number of them to be taken.

That would be great. You guys are a great example of completely covering with garb what *could* be very ugly/non-period armour underneath.

I'm in the red pants in the first one. As you can see, most of it is covered. The guys I'm fighting has a plastic BP covered in leather under his surcoat. In the group pic, there is a lot of hiddenness.

Nope, Im sure not.

He's from my neck of the woods and was a great help to my early fighting career though...

I was squired to Aethelred the Jute in Caid before I moved back the the KC area. Aethelred was squired to William the Silent, who was I believe squired to a tree or something back in about 1792.

Baroness Dorothea and Sir Ivan of Drachenwald in Crown Tourney April 08. Both are in hidden plastic armour. Baroness Dorothea has a new fighting outfit that more closely resembles Ivan's now but I thought that this would be a great way to show them both.

A while back on the post that started this post (how to be rid of plastic on the field or something) I read about the debate on how to get those who do wear plastic to cover it or wear something over it. A lot of oppinions were offered, varying from banning those who wear it to excluding them from tourneys.
However, some suggested leading by example and showing the others what a good looking covered kit can be like.
This thread has done that, in my oppinion. I have never been more motivated to get my kit better looking and to hide the plastic a more beautific manner as well as more effectively. I thank everyone who has posted these inspiring pics and I hope to post my improved kit soon!
