Fencing helm quotes
Fencing helm quotes
I am looking to commission a fencing helm of some later-period design, preferably out of 18-20 gage stainless.
If you're interested, please respond with a ballpark price and pictures of your past work (if available).
Thanks,
Adam

Adamo:
The stainless steel fencing close helms that are in stock at Illusion Armoring for $485 (and at 16ga are actually sufficient gauge to use as heavy fighting helms with an interchangeable visor) are simply awesome (and have an integral gorget).
Can't recommend them enough.
Hope that proves of some use.

You could always pick something up from Museum Replicas.

The gauge should be about right. Then you could have perf plate added to the appropriate locations to make it safe for fencing.

OF COURSE, if you do go w/ MR. You should totally go w/ the Iron Man mark 2. That would be totally b@d@$$!

Waht? It's a later period design.

Max,
That is largely what I was looking for...though I'm somewhat wary of ordering from Illusion.
Halberds,
The perf material can not have any larger than 1/8" holes, with a 3/16" offset between them, and has to pass the "12 kg test." Or something like that. It's on the Society rules of the list for fencing.
"The face must be covered by either 12 kilogram mesh (e.g, a standard fencing mask) or perforated metal. Such metal must not have holes larger than 1/8" (3 mm) in diameter, with a minimum offset of 3/16" (5 mm) and shall also meet the definition of rigid material."
"Rigid Material: puncture-resistant material that will not significantly flex, spread apart, or
deform under pressure of 12 Kg applied by a standard mask tester, repeatedly to any single
point. Examples of rigid material are:
• 22 gauge stainless steel (0.8 mm)
• 20 gauge mild steel (1.0 mm)
• 16 gauge aluminum, copper, or brass (1.6 mm)
• one layer of hardened heavy leather (8 ounce, 4 mm)"
Galvyn,
I had considered doing just that (sans the Iron Man helmet. This would be a surprise birthday present for my father, and I think of myself as more of a Tony Stark figure than he is...), but I wasn't happy with any of the helms offered by that site.

We do fencing helms as well.
Here are a few examples, although we will do a custom job as well.

Your Grace, smile when you take pictures of your work. We can see your grumpy armorer face reflected on the helmet.
It looked better in my head....
Damnit.
Damnit.

I have opinions of my own- strong opinions- but I don't always agree with them.

Wow, I may need to start fencing, just to get to wear a cool Elizabethan helmet like these!
