Dante's old Bascinet redux

So A few months ago I trade with Dante for his lewis moore klapvisor Bascinet.

After a bit of work to pound out the old dents (you really should block more old friend ), remove two of the vervelles, filled in some holes, drilled some new holes(for the liner that I am in the process of making), replaced the visor hinge with one of the Aaron Toman & Brian Price hinges from Revival, installed a spring pin and catch for the faceplate mount. hung an Ice falcon riveted camail, and finally blackened the whole thing because nothing says sca like a stainless helm and I want to look almost as evil as Nissan , I am left with this







Never discount old helms. A little TLC and its amazing what you can bring out. Special mention to Hals doughnut. It made fixing the dents sooooo much easier.

This is step one toward my kit for the thirty this year. If I get it all done in time. Next will be spring steel legs ala' Sir John Beauchamp I post pics when I am done with them.

Quite sweet. Personally, I'd've installed some more vervelles, as post vervelles were almost always installed with smaller spacing between them. Anything up to twice the present quantity.

The present quantity would be quite right for the earlier (by a couple-three decades) tunnel vervelles.

Why the number difference, I'm not precisely sure. Style? Systems redundancy in case of damage?

Die the edges of the leather next time, gives it a more finished look (for an even more "finished" look, bevel the outer edge, and then dye).

I just haven't gotten around to dying it yet . I had to pull two of the vervelles because they caused the visor to sit odd. Yes more would have been better And given enough time If I can find the correct match I will probably double the amount of what is on there. I think they are drawer pulls I was going to ask Dante next time I saw him.

Wide tipped Sharpie markers work great for dying the edges of leather pieces and they come in lots of colors.

The vervails were made by somebody on the Archive... I forget who... Talbot maybe?

Doesn't look like Talbot has 'em. Lots of other stuff, but not vervelles.

You can totally accent leather edges with a red or a green Sharpie. I have a real penchant for decorative camail straps, as longtime readers of the Archive know -- colors, tooling, cutwork, fancy treatments of the strap edges, both top and bottom. It's an aristocrat's helmet. It should look like one, and extravagant blingage up around the head improves the whole look of a harness.

And brass ones that screw in,

... and steel ones too, though in the pic they look just like the brass.

The other link that thread had for vervelles was a dead end.
