Do you attach a camail to a spangenhelm using vervelles or do you just drill holes in the bottom?

Generally, drill holes. I don't think vervelles show up until bascinets do.

Since most "spangenhelms" (i.e. conical helms circa 1066) would be worn over a coif, what you probably want to do is attach the maille to the helm in such a manner that it appears to be flowing out from under the helm. I have done this here:
