not to mention "aketon over maille", which is also plausibly documentable.

i see. I suspect they concluded they are geometric kufic characters because they can read them and they mean something which makes sense. in the case of the text embroidery on the garment, it's pretty legibly mirror-writing in a geometric script, which is well-documented in many other places. Re: antonio banderas must be so pleased

A ring is just a piece of art. No different than an effigy. I don't reject the possibility out of hand, the Norse were pretty accepting of other gods and tolerant of other peoples' religions. I'm just skeptical of art as proof of things. Especially when it's an artistic representation of another ar...

I am a researcher. I am firmly of the opinion that data should be made accessible...after i get my publications out and peer review does its job and sanity checks what i've done. Much of what i do is NIH funded, and at least in theory data sets _must_ be made public (eventually). Researchers tend to...

Atmospheric Lead levels in 14th c. Europe decline in plague

Whole Kit for sale -- Mac Bible (ish).

I do not make this post lightly. I've spent about 5 years building this kit up to a respectable point, but I spent the five years after that doing nothing with it at all. I haven't fought in at least 4 years. I like the kit, but I don't necessarily have to haul it around forever -- and I'm moving so...

That's certainly why I stopped fighting. I haven't picked it back up again because, quite frankly, i don't want brai...

Re: Things We See (and Things We Overlook) in the SCA

In some sense, the obvious modernities (the parking lot of cars) are less jarring to me than the "not-obviously-modern" things which are actually not documentable, like the boy-scout style plank chairs ('viking x chair'). Once you go down the research hole, half-assed attempts or institutionalized t...
