I would also agree with Sir Bart. I use good quality Birch or I have also started using Apple ply. Save yourself the heartache and start off with good quality materials. I assure you it will turn out far better. Look forward to seeing some pics of your shields.

What size and style?

This Shield is a collabrative effort...I did the shield, the painting was done by HG Duke Aaron, and Sir Tighnernan made the fluted shield boss. We are gifting this as a prize for the tourney to be held at Sport of Kings.

I just starting using one this size exactly like it. I actually like it a lot. I find it a great size very mobile with just enough coverage not to limit shot selection.

I use rope under the rawhide and it acts quite well as a buffer to the shock. I had a great teacher in Sir Bartholemew Hightower.

Birch Viking Shields
Anyone interested in Viking round shields I was thinking of doing a couple for sale. I am doing them painted with two colors and edged with rawhide saddle stitched. I will be asking $100 plus shipping. Note no shield boss and no handle...just FYI! I am including a pic of mine.
