Re: 2012 Fighting Resolutions: Mid-year Check-in!
a) Make MMA training a minimum of three times a week. Get an amateur fight or two under my belt. Semi successful - had an interclub, then cut back on training. b) Make HEMA training every possible week. Push to get new training group up and running. Pretty much, although not liking the local option...

LeeC - I got that shortly after I posted, but then my copy of Space Battleship Yamato arrived and killed a couple hours. I'm getting in touch with some Germans I've started training with to see what they know about fechfedern, or maybe have a few lying around. After BON, I've re-evaluated my level ...

The following link shows a panel from Talhoffers 1459 fechtbuch depicting a classic front snap kick in armored combat. http://www.thearma.org/pdf/th19.jpg You might think so until you've had a JKD instructor kick you as hard as he can when you are wearing a full kit. Hardly moves you unless its abo...

Re: Kicking in WMA?
Besides the great Krotchpunt manual, where would I find kicking in any of the WMA fechtbuchs? I'm seeing some small trips and what sound kind of like the kicks you do in judo to knock the guy's feet a little off the ground so he'll go down, but not the classic front snap kick. I'd say we see three ...

New Longsword Group in London, UK
I'm rather proud to say that I'm starting a new Historical European Martial Arts group in London. I first began studying HEMA with KdF's Nottingham chapter, and ever since I've moved south I've been waiting until I was in a position to start a group here. This will be KdF's 12th chapter/group, I bel...

German Knight 1500
I wanna be hanging around Nuremburg c.1510 (call it 1490-1525). I'm interested in portraying a low ranking knight. I've got some fairly specific questions on doublet patterns, shoes by social class, almain rivet and gothic->maximillian transitional armours, and so on - I can find a lot of resources ...

Re: Historical SCA-style bludgeoning
It can be as easily a falsecut parry of a thrust. It can be just a mistake. My money's on mistake, since he seems to be holding it the wrong way around (with the long edge away from the knuckles, so it would be impossible to cut with). Either that, or I'd suggest it's a bad drawing of a clip-point ...

Richard, which Bolognese material and which centuries? Pretty new to thinking of using historical texts for rapier and stuff, not familiar with which guys would be more helpful. Just draw and tip cuts. No percussive cuts, it's standard heavy rapier. yeah, I figured it would be. but without a cage, ...

Re: Fighting With a Simple Cross-hilted Rapier
To clarify, are you fighting with cuts allowed, or not? They radically change the game, and a lot of the sources for minimal/no complex hilt (e.g. Meyer's rappier or Bolognese, or basically anything early enough not to use a complex hilt) rely on cuts as a central part of their game. Maybe Thibault ...

Re: Appearance and the SCA social structure
If you're going to want to enforce the rules, rather than keep looking on as people get their public kicks from ignoring them, then you're probably going to need a means of enforcement, if rolling your eyes and tutting hasn't worked. That means either using the existing enforcement mechanisms (the o...

Re: Full contact sparring with synthetic wasters
There are now Rawlings wasters with black blades, at least for longswords. They're the "Proline Xtreme" version, designed to be more stiff and durable. They're still much better balanced (especially with a metal crossguard) than the Cold Steel plastic club, and much more forgiving to be hit with . ...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
Having done quite a bit of 'rebated steel' fighting and having WATCHED several C&T practices there is a similarity. The biggest difference seems to be that C&T is a grown up game of tag for those playing while most active 'rebated steel' fighting is done for a audience so its a bit more 'flashy" (i...

If Yellow attacks Mr. Left's head, is he going to leave the buckler in place and hope that the sword gets there in time to block? Re: Treadmill shows medieval armour influenced battles
I have a couple of counters to your comments. There us a survival bias in the armor that survived to present day. Most average or larger suits of armor would be reused. It's like going to a store after a sale. The common sizes are sold out, the very small and very large sizes are left. On sizes of ...

Tempting. I like the very late 15th/early 16th century stuff, especially that suit in the Kelvingrove I've made a thread about somewhen. Not quite "munitions" grade though, I guess. It's also that I can't afford shinier suits. Or any suit, probably...Peikko wrote:Why...you gonna get one?

ain't it just...and it's a proper munition piece too. Close up you notice that the edges are a mess, the visor is crooked (won't open properly as a result) and its just thrown together...it was perhaps the work of a few hours. But it is lovely...the SCA (and LH) needs more munition armour IMHO. Dag...

I have to wonder if the London pattern wasn't more designed for traveling work (like a farriers forge, small, compact, does EVERYTHING in one place), so has all the bells and whistles one might need, whereas a firmly located smith would have things set up where he needs them, day in day out, for ro...

Out of interest, can anyone source using the quillons offensively in armoured fighting in period? It just occurred to me while reading Ringeck's Kampffechten that all strikes or thrusts are with the point or pommel. The quillons get used to hook legs and the opponent's sword, but that's it.
