I made a test like this three years ago and the result was more or less the same. I made the test with a machine from the University. The ring was more weak in the overlap zone, the rivet broke in two parts about 70 kgs ( 140 pound?). Two years later, I made another test with thicker rivet and the r...

I think the conquerors´mail probably was round section and round rivet. It was more usual in Spain becouse the muslim´s influence. Perhaps was you, Gordon. I put long time ago photos with the Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada´s mail. It is in the National Museum of Colombia. It was made in Toledo around...

May be this coif was otoman, later than XV century. I don´t know a lot about it but I think so. -It is all riveted, very stranger before the XIV-XV Century. -Too it is a big wire and round section, more usual in muslim mail, I think. The German mail was usually less than 2 mm diameter. And after XI...

Can you say dates about the rings? Form, diameter, solid rings, rivet round or wedge,...? It´s important for to know where the coif was made.
Thanks, very interesting coif.

Care to discuss construction tecnique at all?

Of course I don´t care. What do you want to know?
I make like I said before, but it is practice, a lot of practice.
If you prefer, we can do a tutorial in the riveted maille group, with photos and step to step.

Hi, Signo. Really like we do riveted mail. - I coil the wire. - Cut the ring. -Make the overlap. -Hit for to get flat the overlap zone. -Heat fot to get very soft ring. -Now I clean the ring with acid because it is rust with scale and it is very dirty and hard and I need a very soft iron ( the overl...

Mail replica with round section rings

Hi, mailmakers. A few months ago, I discussed with other mailmakers about the back of the rings and too because I didn´t hit the ring with a hammer when I am peening the rivet. Well, they were right. Now I had changed my tools and I hit strong the ring so I get a very nice ring, back and up. Here y...

I use pliers with the punch ( sometimes I punch too) or drift. Too I use drill bit HHS for hard steel. I sharpen the tip round or like a little screwdriver ( but with 0'7-0'8 mm width), according to round or wedge rivet. The overlap width is 1'8-2 mm before the punch. I´ll put photos with the tools...
