just a few minutes ago, i was blackening some small lames, using oil and heat. what i noticed is that it produced a nice fine finish similar to an aerosol paint but with the same effect, it scrapes off easily... and it is not worth the smell and the fumes you breathe. from now on i will go with blac...

It seems in the upper pic it is used the 3rd way, the inward version.

How does this design work, is it some sort of sliding rivet mechanism?

Without seeing it from the inside i can only speculate.

unfortunately there are not any armour society like thouse mentioned above near me. i never fought in armour

about the hinged thumb thing, it allows for the natural movement of the hand and thumb, no problem.
