Re: Greenwich Buckhurst armour

I had some old vinyl left over from "Power Rangers", (Pink-PR) but it was too hard to "weed" (remove unwanted vinyl after cutting) so I bought some from Michel's art supply and this is working very well. I'm going to order some higher quality stuff and try that, but at the moment I have been tackli...

Re: Hardened leather SCA fighting

So as an apartment dweller I can't work metal. But . . . If the pieces are to be tooled and dyed, is it best to do this before the glue bath and oven work? But after shaping I assume? Much the easier to do the tooling and dyeing before the shaping, as you'll be working flat, on your nice tooling bo...

Wax hardening is something I settled on because for something meant to hold a liquid it makes more sense, and has the added benefit of sealing my seams, and I've gotten pretty good at it with what I'm using it for. A friend uses the acrylic hardening for leather jacks (I believe there was something ...

If 25 people enter a tournament, 24 are going to lose. You better be able to find more motivation in the tourney experience than joy in winning, or you might as well not play. At this point in time, the practicality of full 3D scans of artifacts is quite as fe...

Re: Shield edging? (SCA) - And now size, I guess

My center grip is 25" in dia. round, which is probably about the norm size for the type in Caid. I based it on the scientific fact that the offcut drop of T6 I bought from the scrapbin was 25" wide. There are advantages and disadvantages attached to every shield size, playoffs between mobility, cove...

Re: Shield edging? (SCA)

What is the shield material? I had a 1/8" aluminum centergrip that I edged with two layers of split automotive heater hose; 3/8" inside of 3/4". That edging lasted over 15 years, with casual maintenance of the leather binding strips. I took care to break the sharp edges on the rim of the aluminum sh...

CTrumbore--The situation you describe pretty much sums it up for both Bay area baronies. I am trying to a light a fire under the locals, but I only have so much sway. Ultimately, I can only control my own choices not theirs. True, but this is where you can use the fealty structure of the Society to...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs

The hooks are a bit of a puzzle for me. It's not clear just how much space to leave under them for the leather. If you make them with very little space, they sit down nicely into the leather, and don't protrude much against the shoes. The down side of that is that it's difficult to get the leather ...

3M 77 is not a water soluble adhesive. Next time, try soaking the cloth in alcohol, or if you don't care about damage to the cloth, paint thinner.

I find it easiest to think of the SCA as a sort of club for people with historical interests to hang out, more than a reenactment group. It is not intended to be an immersion experience, but rather a place to try stuff out. What I'm there for is not what the guy in the next spot is there for. That d...
